Tesla should face 100% tariffs in Canada to counter Trump: ministerA former Canadian Minister and Liberal Party candidate has released a statement on U.S. President Donald Trump’s plans to establish tariffs on products imported from Canada, saying that the country should respond by imposing a 100-percent tariff on Tesla’s vehicles and other products.
After the White House confirmed plans on Friday to launch 25 percent tariffs against Mexico and Canada over the weekend, former Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland shared a statement suggesting counter-tariffs that would include Teslas. The minister says Canada should release a “targeted list of potential retaliatory tariffs” that would represent $200 billion worth of American imports, in order to counter the Trump administration’s plans.
“Canada must threaten to impose a 100 per cent tariff on all Tesla vehicles and a 100 per cent tariff on U.S. wine, beer, and spirits if unfair tariffs are imposed on Canadians tomorrow,” Freeland said on Friday.
She also suggests that Canada work with a number of other countries to develop a joint response to the tariffs, with plans to create a summit if she is sworn in as Prime Minister. Freeland has been running to lead Canada’s Liberal Party and aims to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau following his announcement of plans to step down.

AGREED "100%" !
Musk needs to suffer more pain for what he has done to this country---
pain that he can understand.... Loss of MONEY.
(I would think that a 100% tariff on Tesla in Canada would nearly put them 100% out of business entirely in that country-- except among the uber-rich who just can't live without Musk's overpriced junk...)

(66,246 posts)They are ALL JUNK. (No offense to anyone here who has one.)
But they are literally rattly, unreliable junk. For those who want to drive a video game controller. ZERO customer service or warranty support...
My gs tells me when I look at buying a car, I'm thinking about it "all wrong." Because now cars are made like throw-away wal-hell toasters. Fuck that.
I love my old 2005 Honda Civic. 50 mpg consistently.
swear by them. But if someone hadn't pointed one out to me on the highway, I would've NEVER noticed them. To quote a line from my fav movie, they're "plain as paper."
(But apparently, "pretty as any picture" to SOME).

Give me back my 1973 Nova or my 1981 Camaro!!!

The 100 per cent tariff on imports of Chinese-made EVs (and some hybrids), including cars, buses, trucks and delivery vehicles, takes effect on Tuesday after a 30-day consultation period over the summer. A 25 per cent surtax on steel and aluminum imports from China will kick in on Oct. 15.
While the move is meant to keep cheap, well-made electric cars from China at bay in order to grow and protect Canada's nascent EV sector, critics warn there could be a number of consequences, including to environmental goals and other Canadian sectors as a trade war looms.

(1,698 posts)Canada is in the middle of an election. The tariffs issue has been a rally event in Canada, and every candidate there is trying to take a strong stance against Trump. Nobody up there is going to say we need to negotiate and work with him.
Trump probably thought he could put on the tariffs and it would hurt the Liberal party, but there liberals and conservatives are all taking the same positions against it
