President Donald Trump said the U.S. will "go as far as we have to go" to get control of Greenland, ahead of a planned visit to the Arctic island by Vice President JD Vance that has prompted criticism from Greenland and Denmark.
Vance, second lady Usha Vance and Energy Secretary Chris Wright will lead the U.S. delegation to visit the Pituffik military space base in the northwest of the island, having scaled back plans for a broader and longer visit. The American group was originally planning to visit the Greenlandic capital, Nuuk, and a dog sled race.

(604 posts)and you better have your people out of the government buildings when we arrive, or we will remove them, hopefully peacefully", and Denmark will proceed to do just that. I'd love it if someone would convince me either a) no way he ever does that, or b) he's absolutely wrong in thinking that will work.

(604 posts)I'm well aware of the fact that it would involve invading a NATO country. I'm not, at this moment, convinced anyone will do jack to prevent it from happening if he decides to do so. If Denmark is told to clear out because the fleet is on the way and the US will soon be occupying the government buildings, what happens then? Who's going to start shooting back, to try to stop the USA from doing just that? I fear Denmark would just pull it's people out to keep them safe, and that will be that
Think. Again.

(604 posts)"We need Greenland for national security and international security," Trump said, taking reporters' questions in the Oval Office.
"So we'll, I think, we'll go as far as we have to go," he continued. "We need Greenland. And the world needs us to have Greenland, including Denmark. Denmark has to have us have Greenland. And, you know, we'll see what happens. But if we don't have Greenland, we can't have great international security."
Trump added, "I view it from a security standpoint, we have to be there."
So, it's for 'security', in case you missed it

(7,653 posts)Either that or, when NATO does respond, and it will, they will be preoccupied here in North America and Putin can launch an offensive against, let's say, Poland. Or, one of the Baltic States.
In any event, it is ridiculous, distracting, and cruel to Greenland. And rumpy likes to pick on weaker countries, so it's apparent that he thinks Greenland will be mowed down like a snowbunny. Remember Ukraine? They were supposed to fold in 3 days, and now it's 3 years. They taught the world about grit and determination.
I'm embarrassed by the orange bozo. I hate like hell to be against my own country, but there's nothing about this rhetoric that has merit or morality.
