that this was not the end of a movement, but could be the beginning of a very, very difficult time for our country. The amount of passion and violent enthusiasm based on provable lies, misinformation, religious fervor and hatred I witnessed on that day caused me great concern. In the pit of my stomach I felt that the nation had reached a point of no return. I tried to deny what my gut and instincts were telling me after Biden took the oath of office, but after November 5th, 2024 I believe my initial feelings were correct all along. Although I haven’t lost hope that we can correct course and reclaim our democracy, I do believe that for the sane amongst us, this is the fight of our lives.

(162,957 posts)I watched it all in disbelief, amazed at how easily people can be manipulated with SHEER LIES into violence.......but then I was very impressed at the efforts to track them down. Now it seems like the authorities may as well not even have bothered. The party of "law and order" APPROVES of people trying to overthrow the government based on lies. It's a HUGE STAIN on America. We have become an international bad joke.

I thought that was it, the ULTIMATE breaking point where the executive effectively wages war against the Congress, that we were seeing the end of the right-wing of the Republican party. The dramatic, but expected outcome of a movement rooted in victimhood and hatred.
Also, saw more evidence of just how incredible Nancy Pelosi is.

(20,533 posts)Not everyone watching the live (or later rewatch on YT), had visited DC, and the Capitol building in particular.
I've been to DC many times; half for fun, and half for marches & demos.
Only visited The Capitol once ?in the '70s.
BUT there was a vid at a certain point of the insurrectionists going down a fairly narrow hallway that had a very distinct curved, and painted ?scenery ceiling!
I sort of mentally "bolted upright! I remembered that ceiling! It was unique.
One of weirdest moments - bc it connected me with a strong memory I had of being there. Even the outside shots didn't really do that. Maaaybe bc of the Inauguration scaffolding, the white-grey sky, vs the usually deep blue sky backdrop I experienced on many visits.
