The term “elbows up” originated from hockey great, Gordie Howe. He would put his elbows up, while on the ice, to keep players away from him. It was a defensive move.
Since the US has become hostile to their old friends, Canadians have been saying, “Elbows up,” as a way to express they need to be defensive against any moves Americans may make against them.
Now the Newfoundland (a province of Canada) is producing a beer called Elbows Up. It features a Canadian hockey player using his elbows up to defend against an American hockey player. The beer company has almost sold out before the bottles hit the shelves.

The ale has been available on tap at the restaurant for weeks and will delivered to NLC stores by early next week. He said it's proven to be a popular drink already.
"I'm very proud to say we're down to our last two kegs of it," he said.
Check out the article for the other beer called On Guard. It is made by a different Newfoundland beer company. Made only with Canadian ingredients.
Elbows up, everyone!
