Can someone please explain to me what the eyeliner that JD Vance wears is all about ?

Or is it tattoos around his eyes, so he does not need to apply it every day.

What does it symbolize? I feel like if am missing the cultural significance of this. Was there a famous movie star or an anime character, or something/ someone that he is emulating?

And since he is so attached to this look, I want to know why he is so pissy about other peoples personal choices? In particular a raging asshole about other people who sometimes wear eyeliner.

What am I missing here?

Which I read and will ponder; but am not at all convinced.

I still get this feeling that he has done this to himself. And that it symbolizes something.

I just do not know what.

The NFL quarterback Derek Carr has almost identical-looking eyes to Vance (but is many times hotter than JD )

His also is not makeup or tattoo work.

A very well known make-up artist worked with a reporter to go through past five years of photos and found years when he had no dark lining nor eyelashes as dark. Even in past couple of years—likewise intermittent shots of him with less or far more- or “deteriorating”-- liner appearance. The trend started with the facial hair— meant to divert from his very full face. If you search for photos of JD Vance from earlier in the decade you will see...

Could he have had eyeliner tattooed now? Sure. But there is a photo record that argues strongly against this being “natural”.

what do you think the cultural message is? Is it an anime character?

Is he trying to channel some tech bro style known only within an inside clique?

I am not buying that it is natural.

The thing is that he does have a particularly ugly face, all fat and puffy. So, it could be his attempt to counteract that effect. But in men who are not regularly performing on stage or perhaps in studio, it is culturally not common. Hence my idea that it is a cultural signaling. Of what I do not grasp.

I suspect he was bullied in youth and ridiculed as "effeminate" as he became older for his very round face and rather chunky neck/physique. So, anything to divert attention...

And yes, I am aware that his wife suggests otherwise and contradicts herself by discussing the meaning of eyeliner for both genders in Hinduism. Make of that what you will. He certainly seems to have sociopathic tendencies as a result and Trumpian-level resentments.

He's a dangerous POS, and those wanting to give him the benefit of the doubt on ANYTHING are missing the threat.

Look I don't much care about people making fun of Vance about ANYthing, let me be clear, I'm not 'defending' the guy. But I do know this effect/look can be naturally occurring, and the strength of the effect can naturally vary in different photos (presumably due to angle and lighting), as you can see below. Also, the 'look' itself is just very similar between Carr and Vance. Given these facts, to *me* it seems logical to suppose it's likely natural with Vance as well, but everyone's welcome to their own guess

I have that and my son inherited it.

Looks great, but double the eyelashes that get in your eye.

It's called distichiasis.

He used to get asked all the time about if he used eyeliner, or mascara. His eyes are very dramatic.

William Shatner used to have eyeliner when on the show. I suspect because as a light-haired person, his lashes were light and made his eyes hard to see on film. He also wore a girdle early in the season because he let himself get a bit fat during the hiatus.

Or search my prior post— although you seem pretty determined to believe otherwise. Early pics if JD are clearly NOT WHAT THIS MAN HAS AS FEATURES COMMON TO MEN OF MIDDLEASTERN AND SOME EUROPEAN ORIGIN men. Believe what you will

Perhaps I should clarify ... it may be 'unnatural' in the sense that there are drugs (including hormones) that exist that affect hair growth patterns. All I'm saying is that of the possible explanations for the observations, I consider the one where this 'look' is caused by the growth pattern of the man's eyelashes (and perhaps the shading of the skin around the lids) to be the much more likely correct one vs. tattoos or eyeliner. As such, I should have not have made my first post sound as 'positive' as it was. This is 'my guess', you have 'your guess', all good. This is a pretty unimportant matter anyway, hopefully we can agree on that point?

but I do not see them as similar.

The blackness of JD’s eyes does not look at all natural.

This fellow, yes, I have relatives with this look. Nobody ever thought they were wearing eyeliner.

So, a) maybe I haven't looked at pics of Vance's eyes quite ENOUGH (because I really don't want to), and b) for sure I don't think JD Vance is cool enough to be appearing in public wearing eyeliner all the time like he's David frickin' Bowie or Dr. Frankenfurter. He's too much of a doofus, and I don't buy it
