(50,899 posts)Kids already use chromebooks/laptops instead of textbooks for most stuff.
OTOH, I doubt AI will be able to explain concepts to them when they get confused, like algebra and calculus, etc.

(279 posts)Kids use AI to answer their teachers questions without bothering to even read the question, the Google answer, or the AI answer that they submit regardless of whether its online or on paper.
Alot of my students seem to be functionality illiterate; they are content to cut and paste everything without bothering to try and understand the subject matter.
My efforts to address this are not supported by parents or admin. They just want graduation rates to be high.
The end game looks grim...

(28,517 posts)Even 2 years ago AI could perform the job of an Algebra tutor for my son, walking him step by step through homework.
It's way better now and becoming more and more voice and input capable, in addition to real time net access.
Language and communications and teachers for the arts will be hot jobs... Especially that liberal arts background person that has IT and AI background. Literally AI Whisperers will be a thing.
Remember all those people pushed into STEM?
That's going to hurt.

Or will AI pick up subtle clues from a patient suffering from an odd malady, like an experienced physician often can?
Maybe Repukes are trying to kill us off so that they won’t have to deal with a couple hundred million pissed off unemployable adults.

In his new book Taming Silicon Valley, the AI expert Gary Marcus shared what he sees as the greatest dangers of AI. “I gave a list of 12 immediate dangers of AI in Silicon Valley; the one I am most worried about is how automatically generated disinformation and deepfakes could influence elections.” Marcus believes that our decisions now will impact the future: “In the long term, we have no idea how to make safe and reliable AI, and that just can’t be good.” He also notes that “Because over some time frame, AI will replace most jobs, and a handful of oligarch’s will have most of the money,” that we might eventually need a universal basic income.
This is also why he believes we need an AI agency: “Because, for better or worse, AI is reshaping everything, and we need to have an agency that acts dynamically to take advantage of opportunities and try to mitigate risks. One function would be prescreening new technology, and forcing companies to show that the benefits of those new technologies outweigh the risks.” Marcus argues that “We need to speak up, and insist that we will throw out leaders who would give away the store to big tech companies. And the time for boycotting generative AI may be soon.”
The 12 Immediate Dangers of AI
1. Deliberate, automated, mass-produced political disinformation. “Generative AI systems are the machine guns (or nukes) of disinformation, making disinformation faster, cheaper, and more pitch perfect,” says Marcus. “During the 2016 election campaign, Russia was spending $1.25 million per month on human-powered troll farms that created fake content, much of it aimed at creating dissension and causing conflict in the United States.”
2. Market manipulation. He argues, “Bad actors won’t just try to influence elections; they will also try to influence markets. I warned Congress of this possibility on May 18, 2023; four days later, it would become a reality: a fake image of the Pentagon, allegedly having exploded, spread virally across the internet,” which made the stock market briefly buckle.

14 Risks and Dangers of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
AI has been hailed as revolutionary and world-changing, but it’s not without drawbacks.

As AI grows more sophisticated and widespread, the voices warning against the potential dangers of artificial intelligence grow louder. “These things could get more intelligent than us and could decide to take over, and we need to worry now about how we prevent that happening,” said Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “Godfather of AI” for his foundational work on machine learning and neural network algorithms. In 2023, Hinton left his position at Google so that he could “talk about the dangers of AI,?? noting a part of him even regrets his life’s work.

The renowned computer scientist isn’t alone in his concerns. Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk, along with over 1,000 other tech leaders, urged in a 2023 open letter to put a pause on large AI experiments, citing that the technology can “pose profound risks to society and humanity.” Whether it’s the increasing automation of certain jobs, gender and racially biased algorithms or autonomous weapons that operate without human oversight (to name just a few), unease abounds on a number of fronts. And we’re still in the very early stages of what AI is really capable of.

14 Dangers of AI
Questions about who’s developing AI and for what purposes make it all the more essential to understand its potential downsides. Below we take a closer look at the possible dangers of artificial intelligence and explore how to manage its risks.
1. Lack of AI Transparency and Explainability
AI and deep learning models can be difficult to understand, even for those who work directly with the technology. This leads to a lack of transparency for how and why AI comes to its conclusions, creating a lack of explanation for what data AI algorithms use, or why they may make biased or unsafe decisions. These concerns have given rise to the use of explainable AI, but there’s still a long way before transparent AI systems become common practice. To make matters worse, AI companies continue to remain tight-lipped about their products. Former employees of OpenAI and Google DeepMind have accused both companies of concealing the potential dangers of their AI tools. This secrecy leaves the general public unaware of possible threats and makes it difficult for lawmakers to take proactive measures ensuring AI is developed responsibly.

Give Republicans, or what they became, credit because they played the long game and never gave up such as with Roe where they fought the battle against it for nearly 50 years.
Sadly, the Left was not vigilant and as the quote goes, "the price of freedom is eternal vigilance". We became complacent and failed in that regard as well as being over confident.
But we were a pretty good nation and beacon to the world while it lasted.
Will the last one out please turn out the lights.
Oops! I'm still here. I think it would take an act of God to turn this mess around and if that were to happen it might cause me to change my status as an atheist and ex-believer. But if there is a god, I wonder why this would be allowed to happen (really nothing compared to the Holocaust, but it's early yet). Perhaps the U.S. is guilty of the sin of national pride in believing we were too good for this to ever happen here--it only happens to other lesser nations.

And if cutting off science, healthcare and social security don't kill off enough of us, indoctriducation of the kiddies will ensure that everyone thinks and prays the right way. After a few wars, the air will clear and global warming will reverse itself thanks to the precipitous population drop.
Crazy -- you bet. But everything seems to be pointing that way. At least to me.
