(7,653 posts)Is WI gonna file a criminal charge against him, or not? I don't know WI law; does it not count if he doesn't end up doing it? Thousands must have read those posts. Soliciting votes for money has got to be wrong. I think the crime is done! Do a felony, get arrested. That's how it should work. A warrant for your thoughts, President Musk.

(4,499 posts)Some states have laws prohibiting offering anything of value for signing a petition, but Wisconsin is not one of them (and there is no federal law prohibiting it either).
However, the original tweet absolutely was illegal. Federal law makes it illegal to offer anything of value to vote - it's vote buying.
The petition offer is in reality vote buying too, as he plans on using the signatures on the petition to target people and make sure they vote for the Republican. I'm not a lawyer so I don't know if the way he is doing it is just enough to skirt the vote buying laws, but if I were AG I would charge him regardless.
