Panama Deals a Blow to Putin's Shadow FleetPanama has canceled the registrations of dozens of ships that were sanctioned, potentially delivering a blow to Russian oil exports.
The Panama Maritime Authority is in the process of canceling the registration of 128 ships as part of a clampdown on blacklisted vessels, Bloomberg reported.
The outlet said the move is part of a crackdown on vessels that help Russia circumvent Western sanctions on oil exports via a "shadow fleet" whose links to Moscow are hidden. The sanctions were imposed to punish Russia for its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
UK Friends of Ukraine, which is part of a campaign led by Razom We Stand calling for tougher measures against Russia's fossil fuel exports, told Newsweek it welcomed Panama's move, but the Central American country needed to go further.

(72,091 posts)The weaving technique was very commonly done over much of Ecuador.
They got their name when hat makers from Ecuador decided to hawk their wares in a nearby country with more vibrant markets.
What I recall, the name took root well before the canal was built, but canal workers further popularized the hat and they cemented the name Panama Hat.

(18,617 posts)If the registration is done by the country of Panama then the popped-pimple's actions in seizing the canal wouldn't matter.
Of course, having His Royal Pestilence in control of the canal, it probably thinks that it can force other issues.
