General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsMany people have proposed that we have a Memorial Group to commemorate our DUers who have passed...
Today I got the go-ahead from Skinner. (See my post in AtA.)
He would like us to put together a list of names.
So, if you knew any DUer who has died, post the name here. Once we do that, we'll get our Group.
Thanks!

(9,704 posts)The ones who just never return and we don't know their fate. There are those who just move on, but I am certain there are also those who have died and we never hear about it. Eventually, their memory fades away...Or did we even notice them that much? Did we notice they are gone? Those cases make me sad. And I am sure they are numerous.

His information kept me sane during "W"'s first term.
It was the only place where I could find published, thoughtful articles that raised all the serious questions about "W's policies and the Iraq war. And now we know the answers to those questions. But at that time, the media was full of "tax cuts will help the economy" and "the Iraq war was about WMD's and wouldn't cost anything.

I think that's where it was. It was the BEST WE HAD at that point and I will always be thankful to him for trying...even though it didn't quite come off as "Occupy Wall Street" at that point in time...it still should be in the History Books along with Cindy Sheehan for the First to Speak Up against the MIC Media who had all of America in a Frenzy over "9/11" and WAR...WAR...WAR..
The early spokespersons often get a footnote in History when a movement against Power starts...but, eventually someone notices. I was glad to have them speaking for many of us who had "QUESTIONS" back then.
But, I understand what you say...of the innocence of it.

ProdigalJunkMail
(12,017 posts)Hello. My name is David and while I am not a member of your board I am taking a moment to post some news about my great grandfather, William who most of you know as Junk.
On Monday, the 10th of March, at approximately 4:00PM, just 14 days shy of his 85th birthday, William suffered a massive stroke. He was found by his wife, Ruth about an hour later. He was taken to a local hospital where he lived for two days then had a heart attack that was his end. He never regained consciousness after the stroke and doctors assured us that he was unaware of what was happening to him. William died at 7:24PM, March 12, 2003.
He is survived by his wife (his and her second marriage) of 11 years, Ruth. He had eleven sons, all of whom are still alive and one daughter who died at the age of four. He had 42 grandchildren and 71 great grandchildren and my sister and her husband gave him his first great great grandchild in November of last year. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Elanor (1918-1989) and daughter Samantha (1942-1946). He lived in amazing times and brought insight and discerment to those of us who would learn from him.
Now a little personal note to those of you with whom he chatted. I am a rather staunch Republican and my great-grandfather was a fairly liberal Democrat. While we disagreed on many many things, he loved this board and so do I. I got him signed on for the first time a few months back and after showing him how to browse your site and post messages (thanks to all the admins for making this such an easily accessible website) he was off and running.
The discussions he had here and the people that he was getting to know gave him a new light that I had not seen in him for a long while. He worked literally to his last moments and enjoyed life, but this place seemed to fire him in a way that little else had in recent years. We had some wonderful discussions based on what he learned of and talked about here. I just want to thank all of you for allowing him a place to come and voice his opinions and listen to those who were like minded. Like I said, he loved this place.
Services will be held on Friday at 1:30PM. I would ask that those of you who are inclined to say a little prayer of remembrance for him, and those who are not inclined, if you just think of him, that would be greatly appreciated. Also, anything written in response to this thread (provided appropriate) will be sent along with him to his resting place; I think he would like that.
I will be checking back tonight and tomorrow. Thank you all for helping to so enrich the last few months of his life.
David

Watch the black smoke fly to heaven
See the red flame light the sky

(13,428 posts)We made it to a couple of Fundays and those were weekends that left me treasuring the memories. Yes, they were great parties and lots of fun, but what set them apart for me was John and time with him and all his friends.
We met John when he came to our house for the first ever DU meetup--along with Scott (Keph) and Doctor Gonzo. As others here have come to realize, a DU meetup is a whole lot of fun, and it is not at all like meeting people for the first time. We had a blast that weekend, and when John said, "Come on up to Saginaw for Funday in June!" we started making the plans.
He was a friend and I miss him. I'm so very glad that others here remember him fondly.

(8,554 posts)This is a sad sad thread, remembering so many that we've lost, but making a special group to permanently memorialize each of them will be a very nice tribute.
I just found out here this afternoon that an old friend of mine died some time ago and without your Group proposal, I likely would have never learned of her passing. I am kicking myself now, fresh grieving over Merci_me, a wonderful woman who I knew for years as "Midge" on a media message board, crying reading inspiring and often hilarious emails as I mourn our sweet lost Mary.
We have long-needed this Memorial Group for DU; just as newyawker99 once so diligently kept track of each of our "milestones" by proclaiming post-counts, dedicating a respectful nook to all those who have passed on is proper and necessary in our DU community.

and always read DU. JacksonB57 was the love of my life, we were together 32 years when he died at age 54 from a sudden unexpected heart-attack. I know it would have meant so much to him to be listed in a memorial here, I know it would mean so much to me to see his name. THANKS!

How about a "We miss you" post where we can inquire about them?

(10,044 posts)Your last post was in October of last year. I miss sharing opinions with you in Fiction about detective novels, both of us liking the type of hero who defied authority...Hope you're okay.

You knew him as PBS Poll-435, formerly prodn2000.
I knew him as Brian.
His dear friend, Mark, contacted me today to share the sad news and to ask that I tell all of you at DU.
Brian loved this board, Mark said. He loved people and was the kindest of souls, this I know for certain.
I'm so sad right now, Brian was the nicest DU member I've ever known.
Brian's Avatar:
You may send me a PM if you'd like me to forward any communications to his people.
PLEASE, may we preserve their avatars, too?
TIA

(34,408 posts)I have long thought this was something we should do.
I just read through, there is one I am thinking of but can't remember for certain and I will add him later if I don't see his name come up. It was an odd name that I knew well but never put sounds to it, one of those hard for me to remember.
Sad, sad thread. There are actually quite a few I did not know had left us. Missed their names but never thought it was because they had died. I think I will go meditate for a while.
Thank you.
