Apparently some of the phones were used for conning people. Guards arrested, too.
What the media doesn't say is that phone calls can cost $5/minutes in state prisons, especially if they are privately run. I'd want a cellphone, too, instead of paying ridiculous rates like that.
I know someone in Texas who had to pay almost $900 for one phone call from a loved one because they didn't know what the rate was.

(5,330 posts)It has indeed been a racket, but still no excuse for allowing cell phones in which can be used to coordinate criminal activity on the outside as well as plot escape attempts and other security threats to a prison.
Those guards should be ashamed.

(5,330 posts)In many states, aiding or abetting the smuggling of contraband (including cell phones) inside a prison is a felony offense.
Those guards will not only lose their jobs, but likely end up with a felony record and never be able to work in law enforcement or "corrections" ever again.
A pretty high risk and price to pay just to make a few extra bucks off the inflated prices desperate prisoners are willing to pay for those things...
