(37,272 posts)Michigan, if it were a Canadian province, would be more on par with Quebec economically.
One nice thing about being a Canadian province is you can actually run a deficit and issue bonds like a sovereign nation. There are definite pluses to confederation.
...and we would fall under the Canada Health Act and receive transfer payments for single-payor Medicare!

(3,569 posts)We could go it alone simply. Keep our money here instead of giving it to a bunch of dumbases in Alabama.

(83,370 posts)Even advocating for it shouldn't earn a hide. I saw another Texas thread floating around. Advocating that someone get thrown out might get a hide though.

(5,477 posts)I think we'd be better of financially and culturally.

(120,925 posts)the legislature took matters into its own hands and took us out. Several years of gunfire followed. By the end of Round Three, we were back

(29,414 posts)I live in Houston (pop. 2.2 million, Greater Houston Area 5.5 million) and I've only ever seen one. On a beat up pickup truck. I chuckled and thought "how typical."

(6,789 posts)than most city folks.
I've taken many "blue highway" trips through this state I grew up in. It's a different world in medium/small cities.

(29,414 posts)To the rest of us, East Texas truly is "A whole 'nuther country" and it's not the country/state in the travelogs, other than the landscape-beauty of it

(546 posts)I would prefer for those individuals who want to leave to just go ahead and move elsewhere. Canada has a huge landmass but a population (36 million) just under that of California (39 million).

(68,884 posts)if we decide as a state to do it.
If we can get Oregon on board, we can erase the border between our two states, and proclaim the Republic of Cascadia.

(29,414 posts)you'll have to build walls down the middles of your states before you can secede? Who's gonna pay for that?

(68,884 posts)Spokanistan and points East keep on their side voluntarily. They don't want to come west over the mountains and get liberal all over themselves...

(29,414 posts)Not much population left for your country. What's to keep the original Natives from kicking you out?

(8,554 posts)And if the Cascadia secession included much of CA, I'd be all for it. But I sure wouldn't want my daughter down in the Bay area to be stuck being just "Left Coast" for the rest of her days.
The original Cascadia was also BC and northern California...nowadays, I think it should go all the way and just include the entire West coast.

(29,414 posts)except for the fact that they're all dormant volcanoes and part of the Pacific's Ring of Fire
And whenever California gets The Big One, not being part of the union with the rest of the states would not work out so well for getting aid.
Short of Lucifer's Hammer hitting right in the middle of Yosemite, talk of breaking up the states is rather fruitless. We're all in it together, for better or worse.

And when my volcano finally blows, same story...it's all over.
Seriously tho, up here FEMA has plans to evacuate "survivors" of that Big One across the Cascades to their camp in Eastern WA.

(46,179 posts)I'd like the rest of the Union to join my state, at least the population-heavy western half of my state, in enlightened evolution.

(757 posts)I do wonder if we're not pissing up a rope trying to drag all of the USA into the 21st century all at once sometimes. Not too many of our states would probably be able to hack it as sovereign nations, but there's a certain appeal to taking a heaping hunk of the power of the federal government and putting into the hands of a handful of regional governments instead...

(10,031 posts)And the poorest people of the poorest state in the union would suffer terribly. On the other hand, my native state, Georgia, would probably do just fine on its own.

(3,701 posts)Thanks largely to Atlanta and the souths busiest port now is in Savannah. Georgia has a low cost of living which means it doesn't pay it's work force what it should, but Georgia has lots of money.
