My friend was driving me to the grocery store early this evening. The radio was on FM but we got stuck in a traffic jam so to hear if there was a cause for the jam, we switched to 640 am in Atlanta.
I 'd heard radio demagogue Mark Levin briefly a couple of times. I know an older lady (in NJ) who'd began listening to his garbage back in 2008 or so and has since become frightened beyond reason because of the poisonous propaganda Levin spews.
What my friend and I heard on Levin's 7/13/2012 program was beyond disgusting. Misinforming the undereducated with lies is Levin's M.O..
My friend and I were shocked to hear Angie's list is a sponsor of Levin.
Anyhow, I can't remember the last time I ever felt compelled to write a company about their commercials. BTW, I LIKE Angie's List and have been a contributing member for a few years. I recently wrote a 5* review of the wonderful animal clinic which has treated our pets for 5 years.
Anyhow, here is the letter I just emailed to Angie's list:
'Mark Levin', a radio personality I know about but had heard on the radio only a couple of times, briefly, accused the President of the United States of being a liar and 'an agent of Marxism whose goal is to destroy America'. We were shocked by how many falsehoods or and ignorant statements Levin included in 15-20 minutes of his program.
However my friend and I were more shocked to discover Angie's List is a prominent sponsor of Mark Levin's hate radio program.
My friend is also an Angie's List member. Both of us are about 60 and are patriotic, middle class Americans.
Have Angie's list corporate officers ever listened to Mark Levin's radio program? Mark Levin's poisonous propaganda far exceeds controversial 'free speech' content.
It's hard to believe that a responsible American company would sponsor a hateful, possibly even dangerous demagogue like Levin.
I have used Angie's List as a resource to hire home service companies as well as professionals including doctors, dentists and veterinarians. I have enjoyed writing reviews in order to help fellow members.
However, if the management of Angie's List continue to support 'hate radio' with the money you collect from List members such as myself then I will have to discontinue my Angie's List membership in the future.
Sincerely,
***** ********

(9,131 posts)No matter how low the ad rates may be it's an VERY STUPID business decision to sponsor the likes of Limbaugh and Levin.

(6,890 posts)What exactly does she provide that you cannot do for yourself? I find the best service providers when I talk to my friends, family, and neighbors. I have been in the current residence for sometime and I have built relationships with the plumber, electrician, HVAC, carpenter, etc. We should all strive to build relations with our service providers that way we know exactly what to do when the situations arise. Angie's List would serve no purpose and not worth the expense, I strongly suggest you end you membership with this organization.

(9,131 posts)Physioex that was exactly how I managed for 18 years in New Orleans.
But when I'd moved to ATL and was busy managing the repairs of my hurricane damaged NOLA home, I got ripped off by a couple of home repair people here who were recommended by locals.
Angie's list has actually been very useful to me. For a couple of years I have enjoyed contributing honest reviews of the service providers and professionals I've employed. Only one out of 12 has been a negative review. I also write reviews on the local YELP site.
If Angie's list will respond to the concern of members and stop sponsoring hate radio I may consider remaining a member.

When asked about becoming the public face for Angie's List, Hicks Bowman said: "I love what we do for consumers. I love being an advocate for the right, fair way to do things." I hope that William Oesterle, Angela Bowman Hicks and the rest of the Angie's List executive team will take Angie's words into consideration and end their support for hate media. Until they do, I hope that you will withhold your support from Angie's List, spread the word, and politely voice your concerns directly to Angie's List via Facebook, Twitter and by calling them directly at 888-888-5478. (6,890 posts)I had a neighbor who moved in recently and was about join Angie's List. She didn't know who to call for a plumbing repair and ended up calling the plumber with the biggest ad in the yellowbook. I ended up referring my plumber to her and he gave an estimate 1/3 of the big name plumber. Me and another neighbor told her we would be happy to give her references for the any trade and she didn't have to join.
Sorry for your situation in NOLA and even more sorry to hear you got ripped off.

(1,157 posts)Bill Oesterle (Angie's List co-founder and head dude) ran Mitch Daniels' successful campaign for governor of Indiana in 2004. The company is well known for employing Republican campaign operatives when they are in between elections, etc. I have friends who work at Angie's List and they do provide a useful service, but there's no surprise that they advertise on right wing media. That's just who they are.

(57,936 posts)the times into which they fit. I don't think that the sponsors choose the shows they advertise on. I could be wrong, but that is my impression.

(55,035 posts)I don't know how this guy got good reviews, but he was clueless and beyond creepy. He show up in flip flips--which he immediately kicked off. He walked around my kitchen in his filthy bare feet with his long toenails clacking on my floor like a dog. Beyond gross. After three hours, he was no closer to figuring it out than when he started. He offered to "go home and do some research" and get back to me. I told him that would not be necessary. I tried to leave a bad review but it never showed up on the site.
I ended up just using the freaking phone book to find an authorized service place who sent a guy who fixed it within half an hour. It just needed a small part.
I immediately canceled my subscription and would never use Angie's List again. I thought it was a scam then, and after reading this post, I am even more convinced.

As for Levin, whenever I listen to his show he keeps repeating the same old "freedom/deregulation/capitalism/individual liberty" mantra without regard to any facts calling those things in question. He was howling about Obamacare because...how DARE a penny of tax dollars fund HEALTH CARE...
