(524 posts)But the last mile costs are insane. Spending a million bucks to get cable or fiber to some house in the mountains is a waste of money. Thats where starlink is good. At some point I see companies like comcast "sub" contracting to starlink. Cheaper for comcast to pay the 500 bucks for a starlink dish and slap a comcast label on it, than to run fiber a few miles to a single house some where in the middle of no where.
I know of a house that the owner bought when when they won a big lottery. They paid comcast 2 million to run internet to their house, 4 miles off the main road. It all had to be underground. The neighbors got to jump on the line for 69 bucks.

(17,757 posts)years ago. Lack of high-speed internet ensures that rural counties will remain poor and somewhat backwards. My daughter would love to bring her high paying job back to our county, (her agency allows work from home) but can not because of the lack of broadband. Satellite is not an answer because it is sketchy during rainstorms; I have to assume that Starlink would also suffer. I am limited to DSL and it fails in rainstorms as well. It rained almost every day in June....
