I have been living in South East Asia for over 2 years now, but keep up with the news back home just as much as here. Sometimes more because it is hard to get the news here in a timely manner. LOL! I often check DU for news from this area of the world the posters here sometimes get the news out faster than the local sources update their websites.

I've been over in PRC as well. How's repressed life over there? Since September I've been living in Wuxi. Came back to Seoul for three weeks and headed back to the hell pit at the end of the month. I have 5 more months before my contract is up there. We ought to get together for a beer.

you'd need to include two liberals in that beer. My parents are here in China with me teaching at Nanjing University.

And just to warn, I am the family's conservative, if I can be even called that. Being the family's conservative means I'm in row one of the left field parking lot and not at the back row of the parking lot.

Are they just doing it for a year as kind of a road trip or is it permanent?

China is just not going well for me. I prefer Korea much more, but I'm going to stick it out until the end of my contract. The three weeks here in Korea was luxury.

I'm trying to smuggle back some cheese and other food stuff into China. Do you think I will have any problems getting it in?

I have a GF here. I'd be back in Korea if that didn't happen at the end of my contract too.

The biggest bitch I have about being here is the stone-aged attitudes and the idea that everything is zero-sum in order to save face, even if they are wrong.

The way they think there is illogical and they give you the bare minimum needed to teach classes. My school provides "insurance" but it has never covered any of my visits to the doctor. At least in Korea with the national insurance you know your covered. It's going to be along 5 months until I come back.

Here is the group's Statement of Purpose:

"A group to discuss Asian culture, music, language, food, fashion, entertainment, art, history, traditions."

In other words, you can be any ethnic origin, so long as the discussion is concerning things Asian.

There maybe people on here who don't want to discuss American politics or who are no Americans. That's why I'm saying a forum under the International section in the same place Democrats Abroad is would make more sense. They have one for Australia, Great Britain, the Middle East and Canada. It seems like it would be fair to have one under international for politics.

I was thinking the same thing. Asia needs a page. I lived in Thailand for a long time. There are thousands of expats in Chiang Mai alone. I go back regularly and care about that part of the world.

was looking for an Asian sub-forum. This is my first post, so I won't presume to suggest any changes. I have been in S. Korea since 1996, minus a year here and another year there and do enjoy learning about what others experience over here.
