Activist Headquarters
Related: About this forumThese 88 universities are Trump allies. Students and scientists can protest right on campus.
How many protestors is one Republican talk radio host worth?
While protestors work, sleep, and plan for the next protests, a local right wing talk radio station can keep going, 12-18 hrs/day, reaching tens and even hundreds of thousands of listeners every day in the communities around those protests.
A few hundred Republican radio liars on more than 1000 radio stations across the country are attacking protestors, lying about their motives, magnifying any violence, and encouraging government officials and cops to mace them and crack their heads. Like they did with the Iraq war protestors, Occupy Wall Street, and Ferguson. They attack government employees, representatives trying to do the right thing, and any citizens resisting Trump. They keep Republican politicians in line.
Talk radio is the only major medium used for politics that has no significant political alternative that's free and easy to get to a click away. A 95% - 5% monopoly is total domination and legislation or competition are not worth thinking about at this point. Liberals need to recognize talk radio as the unique Republican advantage that got us into this disaster and it needs to be included in the anti Trump activism or it will continue to minimize all other efforts.
257 of Limbaughs 600 radio stations, including many of the loudest in the country, would probably have to convert to other programming if they couldnt depend on the help of the 88 major universities listed below. By broadcasting sports on those stations those universities give them community credibility and help them attract advertisers.
In photos of the recent North Carolina protest I saw references to Tarheels (University of NC) and Duke University. UNC 8 and Duke 3 support 11 Limbaugh stations. In between protests, students can also maintain actions right on campus to put pressure on their own universities to look for apolitical alternatives to broadcast sports on.
There is no excuse for those schools not to begin looking for apolitical alternatives. Until they declare they will begin that process they are helping a few hundred think tank-coordinated fools and liars minimize anti-Trump activism around the country.
Heres an example of this unholy alliance. The major Limbaugh station in NM is contracted by Learfield Sports, a major university sports licensing company, to broadcast UNM Lobos games. In late November (22) one of their producers (Pat Frisch) was criticizing Santa Fe for being a sanctuary city and suggested to his listeners on the morning commute that they may want to watch the killer vigilante Purge movies, and, some people may say hey maybe thats not a bad idea.
Its possible he got that from one of the think tanks or one of the national talk show hosts and there are other local blowhards repeating the same thing all over the country. Thats how RW radio works.
Aside from tariffs, etc., the RW radio blowhards are starting to lay out a list of unreal (and expensive) ways Trump will get illegal aliens, criminals, drug dealers, and Mexico, etc., to pay for the wall. That will help the Republican base deny reality and enable Republican politicians and media to support the racist jerks in the White House.
All over the country Hispanics are worried about their relatives and children because of assholes like that, and our universities are endorsing a lot of it.
Trump and the Republicans are going to shout over any progressive activism with a few hundred radio hosts reaching tens of millions of people in 40 red states with 80 senators. In the vast majority of those parts of the US there are no free easy alternatives for politics, especially while driving and working.
Those stations have been echoing Trumps intimidation of judges and they play an important role getting RW unqualified judges on the supreme court. And there will be no crossover votes for that or for impeaching Trump because of Republican reps' fears of being named as traitors on every RW radio station in the country.
It is a huge unchallenged advantage for them, invisible to those it attacks.
Talk radio is Cheeto Samsons hair and the universities below are the scissors. Any of Trumps atrocities can be protested at these universities. It would only take a few universities to shame the rest.
Below are those Limbaugh stations per state and the number per university. These are minimum numbers. Total RW stations parasitizing publicly funded universities may be much higher.
What those radio stations do
Except for occasional innocuous programming, all of those stations operate exclusively for the benefit of the Republican Party, essentially for FREE.
If Trump was to pay a cheap $1000/hr for radio infomercial time, each station, at 15 hours/day x 5 days/week would be worth $75,000/week. 257 stations would be worth $19MIL/week, or more than $1BIL/year.
They coordinate with national and state GOP and their allied think tanks. Those 257 stations will play a critical part in Trumps ability to push his policies, attack his critics, keep Republicans in line, enable and intimidate media, and force compromise from Democrats.
Those stations are licensed to operate in the public interest but they all:
- deny global warming
- fight environmental regulation, and always support fossil fuel solutions over renewables
- fight health care reform
- want to end net neutrality
- fight to defund and privatize public education, attack teachers and work to lower their salaries, attack their unions, push voucher solutions and standardized testing, and obstruct efforts to lower student debt
- use public airwaves to sell voter suppression legislation with lies and exaggeration about voter fraud, millions of illegal aliens and dead people voting for Democrats, etc.
- use and excuse racism, misogyny, homophobia, and hate to divide communities and push voter suppression and other anti-democratic Republican legislation
- work to deny reproductive rights for women and access to contraception, and defund Planned Parenthood
- fight efforts to increase minimum wage, and advocate eliminating it
- undermine the economic and environmental interests of their communities
- use public airways to repeat propaganda that is demonstrably false and continue to lie after being corrected, use call screeners to exclude dissenting opinions
- while railing against political correctness, they loudly demand regressive conformity and lock-step voting from Republican representatives
