France 'to go all the way' to make multinationals pay their taxes

France will “go all the way” to ensure multinationals operating on its soil pay their taxes while more cases could follow after Google and McDonald’s were targeted in tax raids, the finance minister, Michel Sapin, has said.
Sapin also ruled out negotiating a deal with Google on back taxes, as Britain did in January. “We’ll go all the way. There could be other cases,” Sapin said.
Dozens of French police raided Google’s Paris headquarters on Tuesday, prompting an investigation on suspicions of tax evasion. Tax investigators searched McDonald’s French headquarters on 18 May.

Google, McDonald’s and other multinational firms such as Starbucks are under increasing pressure in Europe from public opinion and governments angry at the way businesses exploit their international presence to minimise the tax they pay.

(10,444 posts)The issue here is not simply "taxes".
The issue is capitalism without regulations or authorities to rein in its excesses and the endless, soulless pursuit of PROFITS...of which an outsized portion go to the CEO and boards of directors while the communities and workers take the "externalized costs" AND less pay in a grinding downward cycle.
It international and is systemic to a capitalist global economy.
This cannot be legislated away in one country. It's more like the Terminator in the original James Cameron movie from the early-80's. It can't be bargained with or feel pity, and it absolutely will not stop until everyone is dead and the Earth strip-mined for more....more junk, more oil, more gas, more, more, more...
Until and unless the world acts to rein in globalization and the strip mining of the Earth's remaining rare metals, natural gas and petroleum in favor of recycling, renewables and reclamations for the damaged ecosystems in our current wake, we are all doomed - even those currently riding the highest, for whom the inevitable fall will be excruciating as well.
Morrison was right, "no one gets out of here alive", but he did not mean to create a rallying cry for corporate wealth seeking to jam on the planetary accelerator to kill everyone...
