Microsoft is planning to kill off Paint after 32 years
Source: The Guardian
Microsofts next Windows 10 update, called the Autumn (or Fall in the US) Creators Update, will bring a variety of new features. But one long-standing stalwart of the Windows experience has been put on the chopping block: Microsoft Paint.
First released with the very first version of Windows 1.0 in 1985, Paint in its various guises would be one of the first graphics editors used by many and became a core part of Windows. Starting life as a 1-bit monochrome licensed version of ZSofts PC Paintbrush, it wasnt until Windows 98 that Paint could save in JPEG.
With the Windows 10 Creators Update, released in April, Microsoft introduced the new Paint 3D, which is installed alongside traditional Paint and features 3D image making tools as well as some basic 2D image editing. But it is not an update to original Paint and doesnt behave like it.
Now Microsoft has announced that, alongside Outlook Express, Reader app and Reading list, Microsoft Paint has been signalled for death having been added to the features that are removed or deprecated in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update list.

(36,178 posts)I have to find a way to archive it, so when Microsoft deletes it I can reload it from my copy.
It's so great for cropping and resizing, converting to different formats, and other operations.

(47,908 posts)I really am going to take the time to learn Linux Mint. I burned a boot/install disc,
and it is a nice smooth system, so on my aging Vista machine it will be a dual boot.
Setup for the Wifi will be a challenge, as will installing bookmarks. Finding time to do
these things is also a problem. But it is time to be more computer universal, adding
skills in Quickbooks, LibreOffice.

(15,543 posts)Mac Mail just basically kinda sucks. I use Thunderbird, which is free, but I have some issues with it. Maybe I should run everything through Gmail? What's best?

outlook seems to have some size limits that i can not abide so i use the other option

(4,492 posts)Many companies also run email through gmail. It makes it a lot easier (google docs) than Microsoft.

(2,445 posts)I'm Gmail all the way. I like the fact that, should I ever have the courage to trash Comcast, I've still got email. I LOVE the way it segregates promotional shit and spam-like stuff from my regular inbox and lets me decide what to read when I have time. (Normally I dump the whole mess.) I like not getting so many sidebar ads. I'm just a fan.

(4,523 posts)paint.net was created by a group at MS and is free. MUCH better than the anemic paint in windows.
https://www.getpaint.net/index.html
Is just a overlay for Paint, is it not?
IOW, it won't work without having Paint on the PC. If that is so, what happens to .net when Paint gets removed?
I use Paint.net almost exclusively these days. It is a major-awesome program.

(11,843 posts)Paint is a program that can keep a 5 year old distracted for about 3 minutes, beyond that it doesn't have any useful features.
Hard to imagine anything being dependent on it's (lack of) features.

Although I have been a gimp user for some time (in both Linux and windoze), whenever I'm in windoze, Paint has been a simple and quick graphics editor.

I've used it for quick editing for over a decade. Crop, adjust colour, batch convert - indispensible for resizing for web & email. On top of this, Irfan seems like a great guy (from his website).

(4,523 posts)About
Paint.NET is free image and photo editing software for PCs that run Windows. It features an intuitive and innovative user interface with support for layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. An active and growing online community provides friendly help, tutorials, and plugins.
It started development as an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and is currently being maintained by some of the alumni that originally worked on it. Originally intended as a free replacement for the Microsoft Paint software that comes with Windows, it has grown into a powerful yet simple image and photo editor tool. It has been compared to other digital photo editing software packages such as Adobe® Photoshop®, Corel® Paint Shop Pro®, Microsoft Photo Editor, and The GIMP.

Paint Net is an easier program. Similar to MS Paint but like a step up. Here's a link to the first in a series of videos:

Yeah, there are other free programs out there, but I don't have the time to research them or learn how to use them.
