White House negotiators signal concessions on work requirements in debt talks

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Omaha Steve (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: Politico

White House negotiators are willing to make some concessions to tighten work requirements for federal cash aid as part of a deal to raise the debt ceiling.

The negotiators are narrowing in on possible changes that would further restrict access for low-income Americans to the emergency aid program known as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, according to two people familiar with the talks, who were granted anonymity to discuss internal conversations. Republicans are also pressing the White House team to agree to expanded work requirements for some adults without children receiving food assistance, which Biden didn’t rule out in comments he made to reporters on Wednesday.

An agreement on new restrictions on those federal aid benefits could be a breakthrough on one of the major remaining sticking points in the negotiations to raise the debt limit, which the U.S. risks breaching as early as June 1. But even small concessions on either program would cause a major uproar within the president’s own party, and changes to SNAP in particular could cause a revolt in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

Biden first said publicly that he’s open to some additional restrictions on government aid for low-income Americans while speaking with reporters in Delaware on Sunday. His remarks caught many Democrats on Capitol Hill and even some White House officials off guard — leaving key congressional allies scrambling to try to hold the line against any changes to the requirements, which are anathema to most of their caucus.

Most of them like to call buying stocks and sitting by the pool waiting for their inheritance to kick in as work. But let's face it they don't work. They play at working.

Every billionaire should be required to dig a ditch and work as a Wal-Mart clerk before receiving any tax deductions.

None of this sitting at a desk and telling people what to do crap. They need to do real physical work. Like being a waitress or cleaning their own house, or raising their own children including changing diapers.

In fact, reverse negotiate.

When they offer X to raise the debt ceiling, say no. Then offer to create a new income tax bracket for those making $1M/year or more. When they don't agree, drop that to those making $750K/year or more. If they're still resistant, increase the marginal tax rate. Push the marginal tax rate over 100% if need be.

Going into default is what will cause Biden to lose the election. Exclamtions that making concessions will doom his campaign is troll talk. Negotiating always involves give and take and I trust Biden and his team are well aware of what is and isn't possible. McCarthy and his crazies are being exposed and in the end any measures designed to hurt the disabled and poor will hurt them politically. We just need to get people to vote and not sit and bemoan their circumstances. Intelligent messaging with powerful words will win the fight. Democrats need to fight using both fists and never let up. Get down in the dirt like they do and expose their corrupt and dangerous agendas in a way that amplifies fear...basically their tactics. I trust Biden, Jeffries and Schumer to do just that.

why was President Biden even negotiating with McCarthy in the first place? There was no good outcome from those negotiations that I could see.

The MSM called the negotiations Debt ceiling negotiations when in fact they were spending negotiations that Magats have tied to raising the debt ceiling.

Democrats giving concessions to raise the debt ceiling will become a precedence.

There are already too many disenchanted, too many disgusted, too many who feel disenfranchised. There will be a wave of the most important Democratic votes that just stay home. It might engender a divisive primary fight.

Joe already went on big TV and said we wouldn't negotiate over the debt ceiling.

Better than admitting that we won't stand up to our word, would be to start courting the republican business leaders who know act a default would do to the country.
