White S. Goings Jr. endured a lot in the last seven months of his short life.
The Army Air Corps sergeant from rural Peru, Nebraska, survived the Dec. 8, 1941, Japanese attack on Clark Field and other air bases in the Philippines, where he was stationed at the start of World War II.
He spent months as part of an outmanned force fighting a rearguard action against Japanese invasion forces, and survived the infamous Bataan Death March after U.S. and Filipino troops surrendered.
Then Goings, badly weakened, died July 19, 1942, of malaria and dysentery in a prisoner-of-war camp. He was buried in a common grave at the camp and moved still unidentified to the Manila American Cemetery after the war.
