Former Michigan Police Officer Sentenced for Civil Rights Violation for Violently Assaulting Arrestee

Source: US Department of Justice

A former Warren, MI, police officer was sentenced to one year and one day in prison for using excessive force against an arrestee while fingerprinting and photographing him at a local detention facility.

Matthew Rodriguez (49) pleaded guilty in March to one count of deprivation of rights under color of law. On 13 June 2023, then-officer Rodriguez was fingerprinting and photographing an arrestee, J.S., who had recently been brought to the Warren Police Department’s jail for processing. During fingerprinting, Rodriguez and J.S. got into a verbal argument and began trading insults. In retaliation for one of J.S.’ remarks, Rodriguez struck J.S. multiple times and slammed J.S.’ head against the fingerprint room floor.

Note the other two police officers do not restrain Officer Rodriguez, the attacker, but help restrain J.S., the victim. Warning: Some viewers might find this video disturbing.

True. The city faces a massive lawsuit and will probably settle with JS out of court. C0RI0LANUS Sep 12 #14

It's a shame he's not going to a State Prison, but he's still going to have a bad time.

Perhaps a journalist in Michigan will do a FOIA request on that police department to see if the two mannequins were at least disciplined.

Police brutality is astonishingly high in the US. At least the surveillance and body cameras are catching some of it.

department's rooms or when they themselves are wearing cameras. They're as bad as the MAGAts at the insurrection who filmed themselves and their friends committing crimes then posting the proof on social media.

Watson to Holmes: "That's a fantastic deduction, Holmes! How did you know that the Butler killed the old lady?"

Holmes: "Elementary, my dear Watson. I looked at his Facebook post!"

In Canada, if a Montreal police officer shoots someone, the provincial Surete de Quebec (SQ) looks into the matter. If an SQ officer shoots someone, the nearest outside police force looks into it, like the Montreal PD or the RCMP. The same applies in all the provinces and police use of force is much less than in the US.

In one example, in 2022 a federal RCMP officer killed someone during a traffic stop and the provincial authorities (British Columbia) investigated it.

mob code of silence. Protect the bad apples.

That "bad apple" metaphor?
"One bad apple spoils the
whole
barrel".

By being complicit in the crimes, even passively, the whole force becomes bad apples.

I guess the gang union enforces complicity.

the two mannequins.
Then charge them.

There has to be a solution to "qualified immunity" cases, were thugs do their thuggish things and stick the poor citizens with the bill.
