US Postal Service delays threaten to disrupt election voting, officials say

State and local election officials from across the country on Wednesday warned that problems with the nations mail delivery system threaten to disenfranchise voters in the upcoming presidential election, telling the head of the US Postal Service (USPS) that it hasnt fixed persistent deficiencies.
The officials said in a letter that over the past year, including the just-concluded primary season, mailed ballots that were postmarked on time were received by local election offices days after the deadline to be counted. They also noted that properly addressed election mail was being returned to them as undeliverable. Repeated outreach to USPS to resolve the issues had failed, the officials added.
We have not seen improvement or concerted efforts to remediate our concerns, stated the letter. In fact, many of the issues raised by election officials are echoed in the recent findings of the USPS Office of Inspector General Audit, Election Mail Readiness for the 2024 General Election.
The letter to Louis DeJoy, the US postmaster general, came from two groups that represent top election administrators in all 50 states. A message seeking a response from USPS was not immediately returned.

(6,847 posts)... here in Northern Wisconsin. We have been living in the same house for 43 years and paid the taxes in two parts for 43 years until this year.
We DID NOT receive the mailed notice that the second payment was due.
So when we did get a notice, it said it was late, and there was a $91.32 late fee.
When my wife explained, we never got a second notice. They told her there was a mail problem.
They offered up a tale about a woman who mailed a check in June that didn't arrive until the first week of September.
We plan to complain to the head city clerk about the late fee when she is in the office next week.

(589 posts)Even at this late stage of the game, can Biden replace him or at least force him to do his job?
I've stated this before at DU: I think because of the importance of the 2024 election and because Republicans are going to cheat in various ways (and of course they've already started doing this), all Democrats, if they're able to, should vote in person. Vote in person PRIOR to November 5 if your state allows it. Another important reason for doing this is that the winner of the presidential election, as well as down ballot races, will be announced sooner (not as much waiting for mail-in ballots to be counted, which are more prone to Republican challenges anyway).

(141,427 posts)The law that created the Postal Board directs that the Board itself is the authority that would remove the Postmaster. The board member slots have been slowly replaced as terms expire (they require Senate confirmation and the Senate has focused on confirming JUDGES over most anyone else). The slots are party-limited (no more than 5 members of one party permitted).
The 2 slots that need to be filled (current occupants are on extension) were announced in July -

And Mister DeJoy? Head honcho of OUR service, otherwise known as the United States Postal Service?!
You have a solemn obligation to make sure our ballots are delivered on time and without interference.
No excuses. No shenanigans.
