Source: NY Post
The polls two-way ballot test shows a whopping 82% of likely voters who say they have no religion support Harris, compared with 17% behind Trump.

the right (like Ann Coulter for example) call the left Godless. we're not Godless, we just want to see proof of the existence of a God before we believe in him. we're critical thinkers! send this article to Bill Maher

(19,084 posts)Her whole grifting shtick is based pandering to the right by being universally hated as a tasteless, grenade thrower by the left. Thus her comment about Walz's son. Just Ann up to her old tricks. She's kind of been forgotten of late, since Dubya really, and that might be impacting her revenue stream.

(19,084 posts)They actually believe the left IS demonic. Literally possessed by demons. and are thus capable of all kinds of horrible things. The spirits of disbelief for atheists and agnostics. A little extra realism to Dana Carvey's old Church Lady character's obsession with......Satan?! They really believe that shit. One of the many threads that lead me out of the faith of my youth. What kind of good, loving, all knowing God just lets his evil alter ego just run roughshod? Or makes Randal and Mortimer Duke like bets with him when it came to poor old Job. Makes no sense.

Religion can be used to sway and control the weak minded. I'm of the opinion since the mid 60s the WASP controlled GOP discovered this and usurped it to push their agenda onto evangelicals. There are also catholic priests who say the most partisan things in their sermons as well.

(650 posts)It's not that complicated. Sure, there are stupid and/or racist atheists, just not as many, on a percentage basis, as in the total population. That accounts for the 17%.

My atheism has nothing to do with my support for Vice President Harris. My ethics, my education, my love of my country, and my intelligence, such as it is, has everything to do with that support.

(11,463 posts)For example, I know many people, especially in 12 step groups, that are not members or participants of any organized religion, but believe in a prayer-answering favor-dispensing deity, sort of a cosmic loving Santa Claus. Yet most claim to be "spiritual but not religious", a very often dogmatically repeated mantra in most such groups in my experience.
I've read "Skeptical Inquirer" and "Church and State" - a publication of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, and other such for years that go into this at length. They often cite Pew Research polls --
https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/2024/01/24/who-are-the-nones-how-are-they-defined/
Most nones describe their religion as nothing in particular (63%), while 17% say they are atheist and 20% say they are agnostic.
We use the terms religiously unaffiliated and religious nones interchangeably. Sometimes we also refer to the nones as people who claim no religion or people who dont identify with any religion.
Meanwhile, we use the term religiously affiliated for respondents who identify with one of the religions listed above including a relatively small number who choose something else and then write in what it is, as well as those who say they have more than one religion.
From the OP:
The polls two-way ballot test shows a whopping 82% of likely voters who say they have no religion support Harris, compared with 17% behind Trump.
Very definitely, having no religion is not the same as not believing in God.
I read the entire article and they didn't make any distinctions, or explain this in any way, or give the exact poll question(s) that were asked, but that's to be expected from the NY Post. I didn't see a link to the poll either, I suppose I could try to find it.

(22,849 posts)There is no god.
If there is, how does anyone know? Where's the evidence? (The old canard that the human eye is so marvelous that it must have been divinely inspired is nonsense. The human eye is extremely limited and can only perceive a narrow band of the electromagnetic spectrum. If the eye is so marvelous, why do so many of us need glasses?)
I don't "believe" in science, either. Science if factual so it doesn't require belief.
If people want to believe in gods, tooth fairies or Santa, I don't care. That's their business. But their beliefs must not impact my life in any way. As Gov. Walz might say, "In America, everyone should mind their own damn business."
