Senior US House Republican calls for talks with Democrats as shutdown looms

WASHINGTON, Sept 12 (Reuters) - A senior U.S. House Republican said on Thursday that his party needs to begin talks with Democrats on funding the government past a Sept. 30 deadline, as Speaker Mike Johnson plotted his next move after pulling a controversial stopgap funding bill. Representative Tom Cole, the Republican chair of the House Appropriations Committee, told reporters that he and others were "supportive of what he (Johnson) is trying to do," but pointed out that the deadline is rapidly approaching.
Johnson on Wednesday canceled a vote on a bill that would have extended government funding at current levels into March 2025 and implemented a controversial provision requiring people to provide proof of citizenship to register to vote because of opposition within his own party.
Republicans currently hold a 220-211 House majority, meaning they have repeatedly had to rely on Democrats to pass legislation. But Democrats opposed the funding bill due to the voting measure, which they said was unnecessary given that it is already illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal elections.
Johnson is under added pressure from Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who has urged Republicans to shut down the government if they cannot pass the voting measure. But Trump's position is not popular among the moderates in his party, many of whom are about to face tough reelection fights in the Nov. 5 general election.

He's pretty much already pretty much sold his soul to the white side, but he's been in Congress long enough to know better.

(137,745 posts)that the veteran GOPers intend to not do that. They don't give a shit about 45. They remember what happened in 1995/1996, let alone what happened more recently with the 45 shutdown of 2018 - 2019, which surpassed the '95-'96 Gingrich shutdown, to become the longest one in federal government history.

(55,931 posts)The voters they need in rural states might not have their citizenship proof any more than rural Democrats, and maybe even less so.

Of course, there's also 0% chance it gets through the senate....so, this is all theater.
And it is freaking annoying. But, hey, if Johnson thinks shutting down the government is going to win them the election.....well, it hasn't done that in the past.

It's not gonna play the way these fools think it will. Give the voters the full throated display of republican fuckery. I triple dog dare you guys to do it.

(52,103 posts)any way other than to shout from the rooftops that republiQans are creating this problem because Psychotic Delusion Man is telling them to, and there is no reason for it and they are not fit to govern.
Then just wait for a bill without the ridiculous voting stipulation.

These republicans are scum. Using funding as a cudgel for their orange master is anti-American.
