Ohio state police to protect schools after furor over Haitian immigrants in Springfield

Source: AP

Updated 8:16 PM EDT, September 16, 2024

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (AP) — Ohio state police will help protect schools in a city at the center of a political furor over Haitian migrants, the governor announced Monday, while local officials canceled an annual celebration of cultural diversity in the fallout over former President Donald Trump’s false claims about pet-eating.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, a Republican, has denounced the debunked rumors that spread online before Trump amplified them at last week’s presidential debate, saying there is no evidence of it.

He said at a news conference in Springfield on Monday that dozens of members of the Ohio State Highway Patrol will be stationed in city schools starting Tuesday following a series of threats across the city, sweeping each building every morning before the arrival of faculty or students. Security cameras have also been stationed at strategic spots in the city, and a bomb-sniffing dog will be in the city and available round-the-clock.

“We know that people are very, very concerned,” DeWine said. “But we’ve moved resources into Springfield. People have the right to feel safe as well as being safe.”

If you look at what has transpired with Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss (the election workers in GA who sued Ghouliani for defamation), that suggests that it probably requires defamation against "individuals" vs a "group" as "groups" have been attacked for centuries here with little or no consequence, because "free speech".

it doesn't mean they aren't actually doing subpoenas to the telecos for call traces and then follow-ups to confirm where the threat calls came from and what the numbers were, and whether it was domestic or foreign, and then reaching out to determine if the assigned number(s) belonged to the assigned people or were spoofed, ALL before they can even do any "charging" or "arrests".

immigrants fearful in their homes or the complaints that police don't come when there is vandalism?

Have they clearly warned any hate groups that any illegal action will result in immediate arrest? That any intimidation will be met by police action immediately?

Have they put up warning signs at the airport before the trump 1 and 2 planes arrive that hate speech and intimidation and those that practice it are not wanted in Springfield?

There are several million federal civil servants in this country (not counting contractors). I used to be one of them for over 30 years before retiring. Trust me, someone got this tossed on their desk as a work assignment.

As I mentioned downthread, this post got a yawn response - https://www.democraticunderground.com/10143307598

It seems the sentiment on DU is that federal civil servants do absolutely nothing.

an investigation, not dumping the responsibility on the feds but asking the feds to assist them. The worthless governor should have immediately ordered the SPs to provide maximum assistance after the attacks by T&V and there should have been an immediate reply that the SPs were offering to protect schools, Haitian areas and help with complaints about vandalism as well as showing up wherever the Proud Boys and their ilk appeared. It took too long for the SPs to come up with as little as they did and the head of the SP should have, immediately, publicly notified that his officers were ready and willing to protect the civil rights of the Haitians as soon as asked and already had a plan in place to do so when approved by the governor.

Telecomm is a federal function (FCC) as is anything that "crosses state lines", which is why the feds get involved. That includes anything like a "bomb threat" that is done over the phone (and such a circumstance may involve some notification to ATF if necessary).

The reality is, there is almost always a "federal-state team" set up for situations like this so they can coordinate and share resources. They all work for "some government".

When they set up these "partnerships", each party takes a role, so the local municipal government may do one thing (i.e., they might have something like an "Office of Community Affairs" that has liaisons with the community and can offer "counseling services" ), the local police may do another thing (say, if there is actual criminal mischief, like vandalism, that has occurred with this), the County and/or State police might do another thing (like requesting if other municipalities are dealing with the same thing, which might allow them to determine if this is an isolated incident by a local or is something more widespread), and the feds will do still other things (again, based on their jurisdiction).

Each has a mission and resources dedicated to that mission and it does actually help when resources are stretched thin.

I said nothing about bombs, nothing about telecom. I posted about the SP finally guarding the schools and asked why they are not also protecting the local Haitians and why they are not helping with issues of people complaining about local police not responding to vandalism. I also mentioned about Proud Boys and others who show up to cause trouble. (The comment about trump and his lackey at the airport was really more of a joke because that would not go over well but one can only dream)

I did not talk about the bomb threats and calling in threats although many departments, and I'm sure all SPs in all states have their own equipment and personnel and I know they tend to work with the feds especially when it becomes an interstate issue. And when it comes to protection of minorities, especially those that are not only immigrants but black immigrants, SPs in MAGAt-ful states tend to dump the problem on the feds so they don't get "blamed" when local right-wingers get charged with crimes.

And, I still say, that when it comes to doing what the SP should be doing, "It doesn't mean they are, either."

This is Jim Jordan's District and yet another rural County that went like 30% or more for shit face. Yet, Jim Jordan will still be elected yet again and Trump will probably win Ohio yet again. Nothing ever changes it seems like sadly. What the hell is wrong with ohio?
By the way, I'm sure all elected officials in that county are republicans. I'd like to see what they think of this situation.

i check LBN when there's a mass shooting. But things do sink out of my sight, no doubt about that.

nonetheless, I am encouraged that the FBI is in Springfield. They have the resources to dig the assholes out and prosecute them. This should be a top priority. Fuck if there was any justice, TCFSF and his feckless running mate should be brought up on charges for stochastic terrorism.

I'd love to see a super majority Congress and President Harris address the incessant propaganda running rampant as an abuse of the First Amendment.
