Snapchat Reserves the Right to Use AI-Generated Images of Your Face in Ads

Source: 404 Media

Snapchat is reserving the right to put its users’ faces in ads, according to terms of service related to its “My Selfie” tool (formerly “AI Selfies”), which allows users and their friends to create AI-generated images trained on their selfies.

Users have the option to opt out of this by toggling off a “feature” in the app called “See My Selfie in Ads,” but according to 404 Media’s testing this feature is on by default.

“My Selfie is used to power Generative AI, Cameos and other experiences on Snapchat that feature you, including ads,” a pop up in the Snapchat app says. “My Selfie uses your images and information to do this.”

After seeing the popup, I searched for instances of people getting ads featuring their own face on Snapchat, and found this thread on the r/Privacy Reddit community where a user claimed exactly this happened to them. In an email to 404 Media, Snapchat said that it couldn’t confirm or deny whether this user was served an ad featuring their face, but if they did, the ad was not using My Selfie images. Snapchat also said that it investigated the claim in the Reddit thread and that the advertiser, yourdreamdegree.com, has a history of advertising on Snapchat and that Snapchat believes the ad in question does not violate any of its policies.

Much more at the link.

Of course this is being done because advertisers believe having you see yourself with what they're selling will make you much more likely to buy it.

From 2011, and it only gets worse.

Only person who took me to task on this was Brooklynite.

It's actually possible to live well without exploiting others.

People do choose poorly.

More about the use of AI:

Right-wingers can’t get enough of anti-Haitian AI disinformation / Meanwhile, Springfield’s Haitian community reports an increase in threats.

https://www.theverge.com/2024/9/12/24243021/springfield-ohio-haitians-ai-generated-misinformation-trump

One of the most recent examples comes from Tyler Oliveira, a YouTuber and MrBeast associate, who posted a misleading video about Springfield on Wednesday. Oliveira’s video intersperses interviews with locals — including some Haitians — with AI-generated images and memes. Just five seconds in, the video shows a clearly AI-generated clip of a Black man driving a white van surrounded by cats. The video also features clips totally unrelated to Springfield, including footage of a woman being arrested for eating a cat in Canton, Ohio, and a clip of gang members marching on a street in Haiti. It’s a textbook example of disinformation.

Would become a weapon at some point. Call me a luddite but I don't post any PII online, especially pictures of myself. My camera on my fone is disabled and covered with black electrical tape as is the one on my laptop even though I gouged its eyes out before I ever turned it on.

I went through all the death threats and stalking bullshit back in the 1990s, it's not new in the west, as those who we now refer to as magats were active domestic terrorists toward anyone trying to protect the environment or wildlife.

So the tech world is turning on us, we should prepare for life with a lot less of their input in the near future.

I don't want ads tailored to me. I want them as irrelevant as possible.
