Springfield Bomb Threats Coming From Overseas Bots: Mayor

The mayor of Springfield, Ohio the quiet Midwestern city thrust into the national spotlight over claims members of its Haitian immigrant population were eating cats and dogs told Newsweek that he does not see either presidential candidate offering a fix to the country's broken immigration system.
Rob Rue, a Republican, said he had spent the past week consumed by a flood of unfounded claims of migrants "eating the pets" started by former president Donald Trump and his running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, which obscured the real difficulties of the city's dramatic population increase.
Then more than 33 bomb threats arrived over the past five days, aimed at the city hall, healthcare facilities, schools and colleges. All were determined to have been hoaxes and many were from overseas, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said Monday.
"We think it's a program like a swatting method that they have come from similar sources, with similar language, and they definitely are a threat and definitely something we're looking into and not ignoring whatsoever, but each one's determined to be a hoax, according to the governor," Mayor Rue added in an interview Tuesday.

The article mentions it but this is probably like that spate of "swatting" incidents that happened against U.S. elected officials and they traced a number of them to overseas criminals. However the "effect" on the populace of "creating terror" is the point and all you need is a bunch of GOP loons, including a former President, feeding that beast.

(14,025 posts)but are not naming them? Why?
BumRushDaShow
(137,800 posts)Because they are probably still investigating and need to gather untainted evidence and not tip off the threat actors, regarding what they know for any future criminal indictments.

(9,606 posts)weeks ago said they are seeing a Tsunami of stuff coming from other countries to help Trump and dis-credit Dems coming from not only Russia, like last election, but NKorea, China, and Saudi Arabia??????????
Saudi Arabia???? Remember they had much to gain from 9/11......and that is why almost all of the hijackers were Saudi's, not Afghanistan or Iraq terrorists..........
Trump gave the Saudi's tons of Military Intel, not only ours, but all other nations that had shared information.....In return, they awarded Jared Massively (2+Billion) for being the delivery boy.............

(15,606 posts)...that were traced back overseas (could have been voip via vpn) and the vast majority were probably from rightwingers here in the states that the rightwing is trying to protect.

(7,545 posts)Everyone wants to know where they're originating. If it's Russia's bot farm, then it makes sense for the GOP to protect that information because Trump is all ga-ga over Russia. They don't want any emotional inflaming over Russia, Trump's heartthrob. If DeWine knows it's Russia and the investigators can't credibly confirm it, we have a story. By now, the origins of the threats are known. My bet: Russia.

(14,016 posts)Rue, as a republican, lies. There was a bipartisan immigration reform bill that was ready to pass but non-president citizen trump commanded his cult loons in the house to kill the bill because it might "look good for Biden."

(137,800 posts)are being recorded in history for enabling this, from the GOP Governor down to the GOP mayor.
They created the Monster and fed and nurtured it, and now they can no longer control it, so they are left with trying to duck out of its way.

(2,526 posts)Trump sure does have a plan to fix the country's broken immigration system: blame, terrorize, incarcerate and deport a portion of the city of Springfield. Trump and Vance are saying that Springfield is a problem and therefore Rue is also the problem.
What is it with these masochistic Republicans who constantly fall to their knees for Trump?
Sick and warped.

(26,129 posts)overseas, indeed.
This is an example of why bomb threats are more than 99% hoaxes. Okay, so the IRA makes bomb threats that they actually carry out.
I honestly can't think of an actual bomb threat that turned out to be real. The rare bombings, like the one at the Boston Marathon in 2015, bombs were set off without advance warnings.
I often wonder if simply not reporting mass shootings, not reporting bomb threat b.s., could possible reduce the repeaters.
Oh, and for what my opinion is worth, the guy who fired on Trump back in July, had no actual political agenda, but just wanted to shoot up some political event and go out in a blaze of glory.

(23,681 posts)As long as the threats keep coming, they have an impact.
So are they hoaxes? Or real?
PoindexterOglethorpe
(26,129 posts)That tells you whether or not the threats are real or hoaxes?
So, how many have gone off? How many other times have bomb threats actually been real?
I worked at DCA, Washington National Airport, from January 1969 to August 1979. In the middle years of that decade, there were boringly common bomb threats to the airport. How many of them resulted in bombs going off? Care to research it?
Zero.
Bomb threats are bullshit and should be ignored. Ignored, ignored. Do NOT pretend they are real, or something to care about. They are not. Ignore them.
Don't close the schools. Keep them open. No one, absolutely NO ONE is going to set off a bomb at the school.
Sadly, the chance of some 2nd amendment jerk stockpiling a lot of guns and taking them to the school and shooting . . . wait, wait, what am I saying? Remind me again how many schools are bombed compared to how many school shootings there are?
JustABozoOnThisBus
(23,681 posts)Anonymous phone calls are keeping the schools closed for now. Kids are not being educated, and their loss will be long-term, unless these days are classified as "snow days", hoping for good weather this winter.
But for now, the bomb threats are working as intended.

(55 posts)But he didn't say it wasn't magats. But they wouldn't do that. Are we expected to believe this, after we were told day-before-yesterday it is just fine to craft a fantasy as long as it meets the need of the moment? When they tell you they will lie when it suits them, believe them. Bad intelligence, like bad money, drives out good. Interested parties have spent the past fifty-plus years driving down the value of Truth because that confounds their pathway to the Promised Land, their christian dominion, a land so apochryphal Jesus wouldn't recognize it or be able to live there.--- Here's a tip: never, ever forget that EVERY other country, government, religion, cult and club has knives out and an agenda to beat out. The worst of all are our neighbors and family members with malice in their hearts and weapons in their hands. So, no I don't doubt for a minute at least some of the drivel and drek, threats and hatred are home-grown. Shame on Republicans for making this happen. Shame on Republicans for making this happen. Shame on Republicans for making this happen.

(187 posts)How did the Ohio State Police discern as quickly as they did that the bomb threats originated from overseas? Any semi-competent hacker can find a relay to make a call appear like it is coming from outside the country so that the call becomes harder to trace, especially if they are using VOIP, which the person calling in the bomb threat was almost certainly using.
BumRushDaShow
(137,800 posts)OH is not doing this by themselves. There is a "team" of local, state, and federal employees who have "partnered" to conduct the investigations - https://www.democraticunderground.com/10143307598
E.g.,
An FBI spokesperson confirmed to ABC News that the FBI "is working in coordination with the Springfield Police Department and Wittenberg University to determine the credibility of recent threats, share information, and take appropriate investigative action. We encourage the public to remain vigilant and to report anything they consider suspicious to law enforcement."
(snip)

The FBI might also have contacts with applicable DHS agencies and the FCC, who can provide additional info/guidance.
This is standard practice for this type of issue.

(3,995 posts)this is the case, tracing a threat to a computer or phone in Seattle might lead you to an individual there; however, they will not have originated the threat since Bot Net controllers intentionally mask threat originators.
System owners need to be advised that their system has been compromised so that they can remove the bot malware. Additionally, law enforcement or IC cyber organizations may request that system files be made available for analysis.
