Trump's shutdown push falls flat with Republicans

Source: The Hill

09/21/24 6:00 AM ET

House Republicans are overwhelmingly dismissing former President Trump’s calls for a government shutdown in the absence of a proof-of-citizenship voting bill being signed into law, a public break from the GOP presidential nominee in the lead-up to the November election.

A group of Republicans this week rejected a bill that combined a six-month continuing resolution (CR) with the Trump-backed voting bill, tanking the legislation in a move that thwarted Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) funding strategy.

Now, as the Speaker prepares to defy Trump’s wishes and stage a vote on a “clean” three-month stopgap, rank-and-file Republicans are expected to back it — balking at the former president’s request. Republicans almost universally support the voting bill, but they say pushing the issue so intensely that it results in a shutdown would backfire on the party.

“Everybody wants to go home and campaign, and there are some, particularly that want to go home and campaign, because they’re in really tough races,” Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Ala.) said. The Alabama Republican, who currently serves as policy chair of the House GOP conference, also pointed to national security concerns. “A government shutdown would embolden our enemies, further undermine our reliability and respect among our allies,” Palmer said. “So, I don’t think a shutdown is good for anybody.”

and they don't want to go down with him...what the idiots don't get it is they've spent years marching in lock-step, acting as Donnie's surrogates, doling out revenge and retribution instead of legislation....and the MAGA House biggest fuck-up of them all... cratering the immigration bill on Trump's command...Trump saw a border gone wild (it isn't) as a truncheon to beat Biden (and now Kamala) with, but it's all come back to bite Trump on his fat flatulent ass...Springfield, Ohio..

and if it isn't obvious to Mike Johnson and the Trump MAGA zombies, allowing the government to shut down so close to the election is political suicide...that said, the ridiculously named Freedom Caucus lemmings are so tethered to their leader they're more than willing to follow a demented self absorbed hate-filled psychopath over a cliff...

but this is a pretty fundamental Democratic issue he was voting on, especially because 14 Republicans saw fit to vote against this bill as critical action to keep the government running while battling open racism and election trouble making.

We always say we need to understand the problems faced by the Goldens of our Caucus. Again, this is a pretty fundamental D vote. This is true even if you want to make the case that "it wasn't going to pass anyway".

Government workers are the next to suffer from no paychecks. Then Social Security recipients. Then government funded programs, all of which probably go into (more) debt as a result.
Pure stupidity. But will the press make that point in advance and assist the people about to be harmed in those ways in fighting it too?

MAGA Repugs never admit it but they know the Trump and Vance duo negative campaign rhetoric isn't winning friends or influencing people. Add to that the successful messaging from the Harris campaign, coupled with the apparent success of targeted campaign ads and their political future is looking bleak.

I have ever read! My take on it was them calling us, Democrats, enemies, too. Maybe it's that they've called us that so many times through the decade that they've impressed on us that the two political parties are actually enemies, rather than just partisan politics.

A three month stop gap plan will mean that the government will shut down January 1st. Am I correct in my thinking? That means that the transfer of power will not occur prior to the shutdown.

What then? The House will still be in the control of the Republicans since new members will not have been sworn in. . . .

Is this the new plan to overthrow the government?

Edited to add: Also, if I am thinking correctly, the federal government uses a fiscal year for accounting that runs from October 1 through September 30 the following year.

What an absolute nightmare for our country!

What a shutdown does typically is hamstring's the executive branch more than anything. It's not going to stop the transfer of power, but it means that setting up and paying the executive appointees becomes difficult. Congress is still required to meet, and as they are funded under a separate agreement, they aren't impacted.
