Euphoric two years ago, US anti-abortion movement is now divided and worried as election nears

Source: AP

Updated 8:09 AM EDT, September 21, 2024

Just two years ago, leading anti-abortion activists were euphoric as the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, thus ending the nationwide right to abortion. Now, with a presidential election fast approaching, their movement is disunited and worried.

Within their own ranks, there is second-guessing and finger-pointing, plus trepidation that Election Day might provide new proof that their cause is broadly unpopular. Michael New, an abortion opponent who teaches social research at The Catholic University of America, offered an overview of how the movement had fared since the Roe ruling in June 2022.

“Things have not necessarily unfolded as we would hope,” he wrote in an email to The Associated Press. “There is certainly a sense among pro-life leaders that we should have had a stronger post-Roe game plan in place.” “I always remind fellow pro-lifers that we were never promised a smooth glide path to victory,” he added. “There will certainly be setbacks and disappointments along the way.”

A key reason for the wariness is the anti-abortion movement’s recent losing streak on abortion-related ballot measures in seven states, including conservative Kansas and Kentucky. Nine more states will consider constitutional amendments enshrining abortion rights in the Nov. 5 election — Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada and South Dakota. In several of them, abortion opponents tried various unsuccessful strategies for blocking the measures.

about this too. Women are being targeted in this issue, because of damaged men who in their own life had issues with their own mothers, i.e. JD Vance, the felon and many more. Who knows maybe there are those in Congress who had deep rooted issues with their own mothers. American Taliban perhaps, plus this exacerbates fascism, then onto another group of people, we can see that now.

Preaching to the choir, but we need to VOTE in record numbers, to quell their sick Project 2025.

"Pro-life" - what an f-ing misnomer - used to be a great, red meat, money raising issue. Not any more. Kind of reminds me of a few males in the small town where I grew up. Railed against Title IX.. until all they had was daughters. Kind of like finding jaysus.

But seriously, these pricks, especially the SCROTUS Opus Dei freaks, only care about controlling women through their STUPID male supremacist religious bullshit mythologies. Their deity, who was written as a male role, of course, is a murderous psychotic asshole (thank non-existent god it doesn't actually exist). Jesus, if he really did exist as a human being, certainly wasn't magical, because magic isn't real.

If these penis-having religious nuts dislike abortion, they should avoid getting one. Other than that, they should STFU.

"There is certainly a sense among pro-life leaders that we should have had a stronger post-Roe game plan in place."

LOL like what?!? Put all fertile women in rape camps like The Handmaid's Tale?

There was never ANY amount of spin or bullshit that could hide the consequences of the Dobbs decision from the American people.

Unless their "post-Roe game plan" was "drug the entire US population with Stupid Pills" this was always the inevitable blowback. They're just lucky we're a sleeping dragon, with an unfortunately thick hide. I'd be happy if Americans reacted a little more viscerally when their fellow citizens' fundamental rights are being stripped away.

Euphoric that now women having an ectopic pregnancy will have to die for lack of proper treatment.

Euphoric that twelve year-old girls raped by their uncles or next door neighbors will have to bear the child.

Euphoric that women who have a miscarriage can be arrested and thrown in prison.

What sick fucks they are. I hope when Kamala Harris wins, these monsters will spend the rest of their lives in helpless misery.

“There is certainly a sense among pro-life leaders that we should have had a stronger post-Roe game plan in place.”

Tell us, Michael, what would that “post-Roe game plan” be? Because I can’t imagine it.

And be specific.
Provide the fine details.
And follow that up with your estimate of how the reaction against that post-Roe plan could not possibly be worse than the shit-storm that followed the Dobbs decision that you and your “fellow pro-lifers” so fervently wanted?

Michael New. He’s no dummy. Masters and PhD from Stanford.

But in his bio is this:

“He gives presentations on both the positive impact of pro-life laws and the gains in public support for the pro-life position.”

A shitty sentence!
And what about the negative impact of pro-life laws, Michael?
What about the loses in public support, Michael?

And then:
”(Michael New) is a frequent blogger on National Review Online "The Corner".

Because of course…

Buckley was more strategic, but he's one of the people who equated compromise with appeasement and Munich. He cheered as his Conservative Movement drove reasonable Republicans (i.e., the Rockefeller Republicans) to political extinction. People like Lee Atwater and Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh launched themselves off the foundation Buckley laid.

The GQP is, ultimately, the house that Bill Buckley built.

but then expected his minions to have at least 2 brain cells to rub together to think "strategically". That type might have included those like Turtle, who managed to shove as many loon judges into the federal courts as he could, but the teabagger crowd that came in funded by the Kochs and the later MAGats funded by the Mercers, et. al, not only have less than 2 brain cells, but none at all.

The "intellectual" ones went to the Libertarian party instead and put their chips on Ayn Rand mythology.

…men who listened stonefaced to shaken women explaining everything from ectopic pregnancies to anencephalic fetuses, and equally stonefaced they sat in front of women weeping over their own near-deaths.

Their minds were made up. They rejoiced in their ignorance and in their power of life and death over women and little girls.

Well, those chickens are coming home to roost. I hope the Susan Collins types who enabled such men are swept from office in the same tidal wave that takes out the rest of the GOP.

There are women dying and many more who are getting irreparably injured. The powers that be were happy with this as a campaign issue but now that the consequences are hitting now they complain. They've had 50 years to figure out but never bothered to figure out how to protect women's health, nor have they grappled with issues like rape and incest.

Pro life = Pro Rapist. That is the only demographic helped by abortion restrictions we are increasing the amount of rape babies.
