1,500 striking S.F. workers call on major Union Square hotels to 'do the right thing'

About 1,500 San Francisco hotel workers walked off their jobs Sunday to protest what they say are painful workloads and inadequate wages for the cost of living and health care in the Bay Area.
Organized by Unite Here Local 2, the strike comes after months of contract negotiations with the Grand Hyatt San Francisco Union Square, Hilton San Francisco Union Square and Westin St. Francis as well as a three-day strike over the Labor Day weekend.
Workers on strike included housekeepers, bellhops, cooks, dishwashers, servers, bartenders and others, whose previous contract in San Francisco expired on Aug. 14.
The Labor Day strike, when nearly 2,500 Bay Area hotel workers struck at seven hotels, was the biggest walkout since 2018. The strike underscores the difficulty that many service and hospitality workers have had in recovering from a pandemic economic slump that has left downtown San Francisco with fewer shoppers, visitors and tourists.
