Rep. Mike Kelly on Trump assassination attempts: 'We cannot accept this as Americans'

Source: ABC News

Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Pa., the chair of the bipartisan panel investigating the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in July and the apparent one last week in Florida, called for more resources and reforms at the Secret Service during a tense time before Election Day.

Speaking to "This Week" anchor George Stephanopoulos along with Rep. Jason Crow, D-Colo., the ranking member of the committee, Kelly cited an array of explanations for breakdowns in Secret Service protection in Butler, Pennsylvania, the site of the first attempt on Trump, including lack of resources and overworked agents, and that it is crucial to remedy them.

"We can redeploy money, and we need to do that. Secret Service works under Homeland Security, but getting more people on the ground, people who are trained, people who are competent, and people who have a nose for all this," Kelly said. "These guys are exhausted. They have been played out to the very end. Why don't we look at where we're spending money, redeploy it, try to get more people on board."

"This is not a Republican or Democrat issue. This is an American issue. We have to protect those who we have up for election and those that are already serving," Kelly added. "It's a very dangerous time for us to be looking at this and thinking this is just the way the world is. It's not and we cannot accept this as Americans."

Two thoughts.....

Orange Anus has totally ignored expert advice to avoid outdoor venues and especially golf courses because it's exceedingly difficult and costly to secure them.

And nowhere in this discussion did they ever mention the number one cause of death for children - guns. I guess it's OK to sacrifice children to the almighty 2nd Amendment, but not tRump.

“We need to DO something about this!”

How about gun control? Regular mass shootings don't happen in countries with sane gun laws.

“No, easy availability of assault weapons has nothing to do with the rampant gun crime in America!”

*school shooting happens*

Ummmm… you were saying?

“This has nothing to do with guns! The solution is to redesign schools to have a single impenetrable door! Door control will keep our kids safe!”

Uhhhhh sure buddy

*crazy far-right nut takes shots at Cheeto Mussolini*

“OMG THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!”

Yeah, maybe we shouldn’t allow any insane lunatic to buy a small army’s worth of weapons of war. You finally get it right?

“Nonsense! The cause of these attacks is that Democrats disagree with us on policy! Democrats should never be able to criticize us on anything because it causss our own lunatic fringe to open fire on us!”

Alright buddy. Get back to me when you’re actually serious about dealing with the problem. I won’t hold my breath…

Frankly, if there must be gun violence because of the GOP’s firearm fetish, I’d be pleased if ALL the resulting violence impacts them and only them. Let them own the consequences of their insanity rather than our kids at school or everyday Americans in our streets.

… when you reply to their screeds about how criticizing Trump led to the shooting attempts with “thoughts and prayers” and “this is the price we sadly must pay to live in a free society.”

Because they’re incapable of empathy, they don’t understand the core point. They want a special standard for themselves that is different from the one the rest of us must live.

In this case, seeing our children, neighbors, colleagues and customers mowed down by lunatics with weapons of war is just dandy. Thoughts and prayers, but this is the price of freedom!

But when it happens to THEM, suddenly it’s different. Like all malignant narcissists, they want a special standard for themselves. They couldn’t care less when it happens to others, but when it happens to them, we must drop everything and rush to attend to their needs.

The devotion that your party has to unfettered access to firearms and every attempt to ensure that access IS your problem.

He is personally draining their limited budget by overcharging them for accommodations. And the GOP are in control of the purse strings they could find enough money anytime they feel like it, catch is they'd have to make a deal with us in the Senate to get it passed.
