'It's All True': GOP Rep Doubles Down After Wildly Racist Tweet Sparks Huge Backlash
Source: huff Post
Clay Higgins of Louisiana supposedly "prayed" about the incident before standing by his astonishing tirade.
By Josephine Harvey Sep 26, 2024, 07:36 AM EDT
Rep. Clay Higgins (R-La.) defended his deeply racist comments about Haitian people even though House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) claimed the lawmaker had prayed about the post and regretted it.
Its all true, Higgins told CNN Wednesday, even though he ultimately deleted the widely condemned tweet. I can put up another controversial post tomorrow if you want me to. I mean, we do have freedom of speech. Ill say what I want.
Its not a big deal to me. Its like something stuck to the bottom of my boot. Just scrape it off and move on with my life, he added.
Earlier Wednesday, the lawmaker had expanded on the racist lies pushed by Republican nominee Donald Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, posting on X (formerly Twitter) that Haitians are eating pets and come from the nastiest country in the western hemisphere. ............................

No, Mr. Higgins--you are a member of the House--you can not say what you want!!
You are suppose to be a role model. But you missed that lesson for all the world to see.

(8,541 posts)in 2016 Trump brought his overt hate for "the other" into the While House (shit hole countries/good people on both sides/look at my African American/Coco Chao/Pocahontas ), freeing his fellow monsters to showcase their mutual hate on social media and in the halls of Congress...and yes, Higgins has the right to spew venomous filth but we have the right to trash him, confront him, and not move on...

Freedom of speech has boundries in civilized societies. And he has the nerve to call say the Haitians are trying to be sophisticated...well, his racist ass is anything but with his classless spewing.

(11,053 posts)This is the dogmatic, built-in hypocrisy of phony Christian evangelicals: Higgens claims to be a Christian, so he gets to pray away any offenses, and other phony Christians are obliged to forgive him, since presumably their God will. They believe that everyone is a sinner, but you only go to hell if you don't claim Jesus to be your personal savior, but if you just do that, you can be forgiven for anything.

(173 posts)We've seen this before in folks who live on the margins of understanding, this idea that freedom of speech means freedom from facing the consequences of our words or the judgment of our community for how we express those words. There's a broader spectrum of disorders with the Trump Cult, but this is a big one.

It's garbage and they have no "journalistic" rules.
When a journalist publishes a story, it must be confirmed by at least 2 sources.
If it's unconfirmed, then it's not a "story" - it's an opinion.
CNN can't keep doing this. If they continue then they're as bad as Faux Noise, simple as that.

(154,757 posts)Rep. Clay Higgins' racist online message probably won't help the Republican Party's pre-election outreach to Black voters.

Republican Rep. Clay Higgins saw the news and responded in an overtly racist way. NBC News reported:
Rep. Clay Higgins, R-La., called Haiti the nastiest country in the western hemisphere in a post on social media Wednesday, saying migrants from the Caribbean country, the majority of whom are in the U.S. legally, should get their ass out of our country.
Even by contemporary standards, the GOP congressmans rant was unusually ugly. These Haitians are wild, Higgins wrote in the since-deleted tweet. Eating pets, vudu, nastiest country in the western hemisphere, cults, slapstick gangsters... but damned if they dont feel all sophisticated now, filing charges against our President and VP. All these thugs better get their mind right and their ass out of our country before January 20th......
For those unfamiliar with the far-right congressman Higgins, in his capacity as a local sheriff, appeared in a video in 2016 in which he described several Black criminal suspects as animals and heathens, adding, You will be hunted, you will be trapped, and if you raise a weapon to a man like me, well return fire with superior fire.
After the video surfaced, Higgins resigned which cleared the way for his election to Congress, where hes best known for concocting deeply weird conspiracy theories about the Jan. 6 attack. This, of course, didnt stop GOP leaders from assigning him to a task force investigating the Trump rally shooting......
A couple of years ago, Republican officials expressed some confidence that the partys strategic outreach to Black voters was starting to pay off. The Hill reported that the GOP believed its messaging was starting to resonate with the crucial voting bloc. The New York Times reported soon after that Republicans saw a fresh opening to peel away some Black voters.
I dont know whether Republicans will make gains with Black voters in the 2024 elections, but I do know that the GOP is asking Black voters to overlook an astonishing amount of recent, overt Republican racism.
