Israel says it struck Hezbollah's headquarters in huge explosion that shakes Lebanese capital

Source: AP via Yahoo News

The Israeli military said Friday it struck the central headquarters of Hezbollah in Beirut, where a series of massive explosions leveled multiple buildings, sending clouds of orange and black smoke billowing in the skies.

The strikes in the suburbs south of Lebanon's capital came shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the U.N., vowing that Israel's campaign against Hezbollah would continue. His comments further dimmed hopes for an internationally backed cease-fire aimed at preventing a spiral into all-out war.

Three major Israeli TV channels said Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was the target of the strikes. But the unsourced reports could not immediately be confirmed by The Associated Press, and the army declined comment. But given the size and timing of the blasts, there were strong indications that a high-value target may have been inside the buildings struck.

To a degree unseen in past conflicts, Israel this past week has aimed to eliminate Hezbollah’s senior leadership. In another sign of the strike's importance, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant’s office said he was huddled with the head of Israel’s air force and other top commanders at military headquarters, following updates.

Israel sure does love those oversized bombs that are so totally unsuited to strikes in urban areas.

I'm guessing Hezbollah put a daycare on the first floor and a hospital on the second so they could promote anger towards Israel.

The secondary explosions indicate that there were explosives, IE, ammo, rockets, missiles and their propellant stored there.

Any criticism of using a bludgeon when a knife is called for is harsh criticism of Israel, got it.

I suppose swatting a mosquito with a Buick is a good idea, too, only it's too hard on the Buick and the mosquip iusually gets away.

That sounds like secondary detonations of munitions. If Hezbollah was storing them in a residential neighborhood, they would be more responsible for damage to surrounding building than the initial Israeli strike.

I don’t believe Hezbollah has issued a statement yet confirming or denying his demise

I doubt that the IDF would have targeted the bunker if they didn’t have good reason to believe that he was there at the time.

We are seeing the reactions-

The euphoria in Israel, Washington and some Arab capitals, will be exceeded only by the grief of Nasrallah’s supporters, who are far more numerous.

Delegates at the United Nations General Assembly left the hall ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech on Friday.

Shortly after Netanyahu wrapped up his speech, the Israeli military said it carried out a strike on Hezbollah’s headquarters in Beirut.
