DeSantis orders Florida National Guard, State Guard to intervene in port strike
Source: Freight Waves
Gov. Ron DeSantis said Thursday he will deploy the Florida National Guard and Florida State Guard to ports affected by the International Longshoremens Association (ILA) strike.
In an X/Twitter post, the governor stated that guard members will be deployed to ports affected by the strike to maintain order and, where possible, resume operations at ports which are otherwise shut down.
Disrupting the distribution of food, equipment, and supplies as the Southeast U.S. recovers from Hurricane Helene is unacceptable, DeSantis said in the post. Floridians need a reliable, steady supply of resources and building materials to keep their families fed and rebuild their homes and businesses.
In the post, DeSantis said the Florida Highway Patrol will manage the flow of traffic from all Florida seaports as needed to further speed the flow of goods held up by the strike. He said the Highway Patrol will provide escorts for commercial motor vehicles upon request.

(19,084 posts)it's a finely tuned choreography of containers and haulers. Really a site to behold. But throw in a bunch of guys who don't know what the hell they're doing and it's gonna be chaos. Shipping companies anticipated the strike and started rerouting what they could to west coast ports a week or more prior. What they couldn't will avoid Florida ports like the plague rather than swing at anchor while tweedle dee and tweedle dum try to figure it out. DeSantis has no idea how modern supply chains work. What a maroon.

(3,198 posts)longshoremen make well into 6 figures. they deserve a reasonable raise too.
however the owners are making huge profits, but that's a whole other issue.
this particular strike is more about the millionaire union boss holding the economy hostage to help his buddy trump, which makes it even more interesting that desantis is stepping in.

(19,084 posts)One just doesn't start offloading and managing containers on a whim. Running a modern port takes highly skilled labor. The learning curve for Sgt. Jimmy Joe Bob, FL Nat Guard, is gonna be kinda steep. Chaos will ensue if they even try.

(8 posts)Florida Teamsters stand with Dems, were under the fascist boot of Governor DeSantis, everything he does is political theater, even his own chosen florida Supreme Court knocks down everything he does, but it takes a year or two. Hes a joke, a scary joke, but still a child like Trump.

The national Teamsters may not be taking a stance, but local chapters are backing the Democratic ticket.
Every Teamsters union in Florida just announced support for Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris.
A half dozen unions issued endorsements, including Teamsters Local 79 SW FL, Tampa, Teamsters Local 173 Bradenton, Teamsters Local 385 Orlando, Teamsters Local 512 Jacksonville, Teamsters Local 769 Miami and Teamsters Local 947 Jacksonville.
The endorsements were issued as part of a joint endorsement of unions from Florida, Georgia and Alabama.
The Executive Board of Teamsters Joint Council 75 is proud to announce our endorsement of the Kamala Harris and Tim Walz ticket for President and Vice President of the United States, reads a letter from the North Miami-based regional Teamsters affiliate.
The council said the Democratic candidates strong record on workers rights and advocacy stands in clear contrast to that of the Republican nominee, Donald Trump.

I thought the Florida State guard was a 3 star recruit from Tennessee by way of UTEP and some school in Arizona.
The Florida State Guard is the 17th line of national defense between the Arkansas militia and the League of Women Voters (Simpsons reference).
