Trump has long blasted China's trade practices. His 'God Bless the USA' Bibles were printed there

Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Thousands of copies of Donald Trump’s “God Bless the USA” Bible were printed in a country that the former president has repeatedly accused of stealing American jobs and engaging in unfair trade practices — China.

Global trade records reviewed by The Associated Press show a printing company in China’s eastern city of Hangzhou shipped close to 120,000 of the Bibles to the United States between early February and late March.

The estimated value of the three separate shipments was $342,000, or less than $3 per Bible, according to databases that use customs data to track exports and imports. The minimum price for the Trump-backed Bible is $59.99, putting the potential sales revenue at about $7 million.

The Trump Bible’s connection to China, which has not been previously reported, reveals a deep divide between the former president’s harsh anti-China rhetoric and his rush to cash in while campaigning.

Get your patriotic Chinese made Bible here. Hot off the presses. Your chance to pay $59.99 plus handling for a $3 bible. We sell the very best bibles. No one has better bibles.

Oh, if you’re wondering how you can get ripped off more. He also sells them with his signature for $1,000. I’m sure that will come with years of spam texts and emails trying to sell you more junk.

So I wonder what the mark up on tfg's watches are?

Watch TSF triple the price and complain how unfair tariffs are. Biden & Harris can then point at how
devastating his economy plans are to this Country.

And, of course, Trump wouldn't get a penny of the tariff on his bible.

The biggest printing plant in the US that actually prints Bible book blocks belongs to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. There are a few companies that hand-bind Bibles in the US, and they start with imported book blocks. Figure the odds of the LDS church, whose plant is already running at maximum capacity printing for the Church, printing an abomination like the Trump Bible. Gideons International closed their US plant years ago - and, as with the LDS, they’re not printing a Trump Bible if they still had the ability to. I know of a plant in the Netherlands that prints them, and they wouldn’t put the Declaration of Independence in one either.

“Why not print one in a US printing plant that prints other books?” Largely because of the paper. There’s a setting on a web offset press called caliper - which is the distance between the impression cylinders. Bible stock is thin and fragile on press. It takes long enough to set the caliper for Bible stock that once it’s done you’ll leave it there. Most book printers print on one-color presses, and a lot of Bibles are two-color…”the words Jesus spoke are printed in red” is popular. There’s also the immense size of a Bible; they’re over 1000 pages and they’re typically gathered in one pass so you need a lot of pockets on your Inserter. If you run Scripture you only run Scripture because Scripture needs specialized equipment to run it. And, these days, that equipment is in China.

In essence, if you’re going to print a fucked-up Bible like the one Trump is pushing, it has to come out of one of the big Chinese Bible plants.

It didn't have to be this way.

I take this personally only because - I'm retired now but - my entire working career was in the commercial printing business. Since the 1960's the entire industry has taken a huge nosedive. Long story and I won't bore you with the details.
