As Hurricane Milton approaches Florida, meteorologists are staying awake for days at a time trying to get vital, life-saving information out to the folks who will be affected. Thats their job. But this year, several of them tell Rolling Stone, theyre increasingly having to take time out to quell the nonstop flow of misinformation during a particularly traumatic hurricane season. And some of them are doing it while being personally threatened.
People are just so far gone, its honestly making me lose all faith in humanity, says Washington D.C.-based meteorologist Matthew Cappucci, in a phone interview conducted while he was traveling down to Florida for the storm. Theres so much bad information floating around out there that the good information has become obscured.
Cappucci says that hes noticed an enormous change on social media in the last three months: Seemingly overnight, ideas that once would have been ridiculed as very fringe, outlandish viewpoints are suddenly becoming mainstream and its making my job much more difficult.
He says meteorologists and disaster relief experts have to strike a balance between putting out helpful, high-quality information while also squashing misinformation. Nowadays, theres so much bad information out there that if we spent our time getting rid of it, wed have no more time.....................

(5,073 posts)Then file charges of issuing threats, as that what all this misinformation and disinformation amounts to... and, to the meteorologists and others it's the literal truth. To get a final handle on all these horrible magas, we're going to have to get down and dirty mean, as far as they're concerned. Free speech may have to be amended (if necessary) to NOT encompass freedom to spout any specious, dangerous, threatening thing you want to spew. Other countries (like England) don't have unlimited free speech, and they don't seem to have a problem there with it. Germany, too... although I've wondered how they're neo-nazi's and Bannon followers have been getting away with it recently.
I've had enough. In order to get society back to being a civil society, I'm willing to not yell death threats at my neighbor... even those he's an awful neighbor with a very small yippy dog that yips all night and day, yet HE called the cops on my big dog that barked for 10 minutes until I heard him. He also threatened to shoot one of my cats, and I haven't seen the cat he let run around in the neighborhood for months (a lilac point Siamese, if you can believe that!). Yes, maga or not, I hate that neighbor with every ounce of my being. He's an awful man with an anger management problem. But I'll forego not dissing him to his face if it means we could get something like that to bring back civil discourse in this country!

(85,363 posts)You can get it all off your chest, and theres always a chance that somebody here will read it and maybe-just-maybe know something about it or have insights or experience in doing something about it. You just never know.
And at the very least, youll have DONE SOMETHING, even if only to get the issue in question off chest.

If these people are getting caught and prosecuted, I would certainly like to hear of it. But I have a feeling it's not as many as it should be.

Really cuckoo bananas stuff. Darwin should have removed these people long ago. This is the best evidence against evolution so far.

(10,283 posts)I honestly don't know if what we have is worth saving.
We have a sitting vice president, one of the most experienced elected official to ever run for president. Competent and caring and incredibly intelligent. She reached a billion dollars in donations faster than any candidate in history. She literally has Dick Fucking Cheney openly advocating for her and publicly saying he will vote for her.
On their side is a convicted felon and rapist and fraud that was more than willing to let an angry mob kill his own VP. An angry mob he ginned up himself. A man that personally friends or associates with more pedophiles and child sex traffickers than just regular people I've known in my whole life. A guy that openly courts dictators and despots.
Despite all that those things in favor of VP Harris and all those negatives against TSF, the election is so close no one can say with any confidence they know what is going to happen on election night.
People are selfish, willfully ignorant, racist, misogynistic and incredibly crude.
Because of all that, from "weather machines" to the TSF, Im not convinced it's worth saving at all.

Matthew Cappucci
Washington, D.C.
Meteorologist, Capital Weather Gang
Education: Harvard University, B.A. Atmospheric Sciences
Matthew Cappucci is a meteorologist for Capital Weather Gang. He earned a B.A. in atmospheric sciences from Harvard University in 2019, and has contributed to The Washington Post since he was 18. A Cape Cod native, Cappucci's fascination of weather traces all the way back to when he was 2 years old and trying to pronounce "wind meter." At 7, he saved his money to purchase a video camera, routinely running outdoors during summertime thunderstorms to capture bolts of lightning on film. When he was 14, Cappucci became the youngest-ever presenter at the American Meteorological Society, where he delivered an abstract on "outflow boundary-related waterspouts." Cappucci matriculated to Harvard in 2015, where he designed and implemented the first undergraduate education in atmospheric sciences. His course load required dual enrollment at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While in college, Cappucci began freelancing with the Capital Weather Gang during his sophomore year. An avid adventurer, Cappucci logged over 120,000 miles during his senior year, including travels on the Great Plains to intercept tornadoes, trips to China to deliver presentations on weather and a jaunt to Chile for a total solar eclipse. When not in the office, Cappucci can be found staring at the sky, hopping aboard an airplane or chasing the next storm.
