1 dead, 9 injured after gunfire erupted near Tennessee State University: Police

One person is dead, and nine others are shot and injured after gunfire erupted during homecoming celebration events for Tennessee State University, Nashville Police Department officials said.
Of the nine injured, three were juveniles ranging in age from 12-14 years old, and all are in non-critical condition at a local hospital, MNPD Public Affairs Director Don Aaron said.
Shortly after 5 p.m., an exchange of gunfire occurred between two groups of people. Officials said it was likely that innocent bystanders were shot during the incident. A total of ten people were shot, with one person, a 24-year-old, succumbing to their injuries.
Five people were transported to local hospitals via ambulance. Five others were transported by private vehicle, Metro Nashville Police Department Public Affairs Officer Brooke Reese said.

Economically, Tennessee has the 12th-highest societal cost of gun violence in the US at $2,633 per resident each year. Gun deaths and injuries cost Tennessee $18 billion each year, of which $415.5 million is paid by taxpayers.

(3,698 posts)DC is bad. Maryland has a couple of hot areas. Virginia has a much higher suicide rate compared to Maryland so these two states are neck and neck. I live in Maryland. Pretty depressing and it seems easy access to (automatic) weapons is the most obvious problem. Thanks to the Roberts shit court, no doubt. 6 christo-fascists. (1,493 posts)The US suffers war-time casualties every year without invading another country. According to the CDC, in 2022 there were more than 48,000 firearm-related deaths in the US; that's about 132 people dying from a firearm-related injury each day.
By contrast, in Canada (a country of ~40 million people), in 2021 there were 297 total victims of gun deaths; a rate of 0.78 per 100,000 people.
US War in Afghanistan casualties: 2,459 United States military deaths from Oct 2001 to Aug 2021. 1,922 of these deaths were the result of hostile action.
US War in Iraq casualties: 4,431 total deaths (including both KIA and non-hostile) and 31,994 WIA.
