Harris, Walz to Hit 'Blue Wall' Swing States in Weeklong Push

Source: Bloomberg

October 13, 2024 at 5:00 AM EDT

Kamala Harris and Tim Walz will spend the coming week criss-crossing Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, the trio of battleground states that are key to most of their paths to the White House.

The Democratic ticket is turning its attention to the “Blue Wall” battleground states for a round of campaigning in the relative calm before it ramps up get-out-the-vote activities in the final two weeks before Election Day on Nov. 5.

Polls suggest the race is close in all three states, which Donald Trump won in 2016 and President Joe Biden took in 2020.

“It is a tight race. It is a margin-of-error race,” the vice president told reporters Saturday as she prepared to travel to North Carolina. But, she added, “the choice is clear.”

I understand about hitting the states with the most EV's. But can I say I'm getting sick and tired of working my butt off for blue candidates, only to be completely passed by because I live in a stupid red state like KS? At least Bernie came to see us!!!!

And we worked damned hard to get her elected! We still have too many holdovers in the legislature from the old Brownback days. I'm hoping this election we can get out enough women and democrats to replace them with Democrats and maybe start rebuilding the state the way it was back when I was a young adult. It was really good back then...

We have been trying to claw back PA from the post-2010 Citizen's United fiasco and it has been a long slog but getting there...

Politicians would have to visit a wide array of states and everyone’s vote would be sought.

I'm in a "safe" blue state, and we don't get many visits from presidential candidates, either. Our primary is just late enough that things are pretty well decided by the time it comes around, so we don't get any attention during the primary season, and later on it's just assumed that we'll go blue.

I understand why the candidates don't come here, and I'm glad they feel like they can count on us. They can't go everywhere, and they have to concentrate on the states that could go either way. I absolutely get it.

But sometimes I feel like it would be really exciting to live in a state that was in the middle of the "action," where my vote was being actively vied for rather than taken for granted.

It's all down to the electoral college, of course. They can't afford to spend a lot of time in stares where they have little chance of winning electoral votes OR states where a win is pretty well assured. They have to go knock themselves out in states Iike MI, WI, PA, AZ, GA, and NC, in the hope of being able to scoop up all the electoral votes from as many of those states as possible.

The electoral college is one of the dumbest ideas the framers of our Constitution came up with, afaic. I'd love to see it abolished for a number of reasons, not just how it affects presidential elections. But we're stuck with it for now, and that means those of us in states that consistently go the same way every time have to put up with being ignored a lot. It sucks, no matter which side you're on.

The only real solution is getting rid of the electoral college. Then and only then will each of our votes count exactly the same in presidential elections. Some don't think it can be done, and I agree that it's going to be a heavy lift, but I don't think it's impossible. It's not going to happen any time soon, but I am hopeful that one day it will.

but I absolutely believe we have to get rid of the EC, and go to a National Vote of one person/one vote... winner take all. There are a lot of pieces involved to make that happen, but states like KS can be more than a joke in the country. We used to have pristine land and highways, roads, and bridges to make anyone proud. I remember the days when you go from KS into MO and know it just by the way your tires sounded on the roads.

These people lost their way sometime after I joined the military. I remember when I came back, I was amazed they were STILL arguing over busing kids to school, the street one over from mine was STILL named "Division Street" (you can guess why), and racism was as bad as it was when I left at 18. The time spent in the military made me that much more sensitive to what I saw as the "badness" of it.

Still, I remember how absolutely thrilled I was when Bernie made a stop in KC. I couldn't go; my distance learning curriculum was running behind schedule and I couldn't take off from work at that point. But it made me proud. Someone decided we were worth more than just "flyover" country.
