Republicans to press ahead in bid to block some overseas ballots

Source: Reuters

October 22, 2024 4:59 PM EDT Updated 12 hours ago

WASHINGTON, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Republicans on Tuesday vowed to appeal court rulings rejecting their efforts to block some Americans living abroad from voting in North Carolina and Michigan, part of an aggressive legal campaign by the party ahead of the Nov. 5 election.

The Republican National Committee had filed lawsuits in the two battleground states, as well as the crucial state of Pennsylvania, challenging what they call illegal overseas voting.

On Monday, judges in Michigan and North Carolina said the RNC had no grounds to challenge the states' election statutes, and found the party failed to show it would suffer irreparable harm. In a statement announcing the appeals, an RNC spokesperson said: "We are fighting to protect every legal vote, including from military and overseas citizens, to not be canceled by ineligible votes."

As many as 1.6 million Americans living overseas, including U.S. military members and their families, are eligible to cast ballots in the seven swing states, according to the Democratic National Committee. Locked in a tight race, Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican former President Donald Trump both are courting their support. At the same time, however, Republicans have been seeking to restrict voting rules for some of them.

As I mentioned in the PA thread, my wife and I, registered PA voters, mailed in our ballots from Rwanda last week.

Because the Marburg Virus outbreak shut down the US Embassy, we were not able to send them by diplomatic mail, the way they suggest doing. Instead, we are relying on the Rwandan post and international airmail.

All we can do is hope it gets there in time, and they are allowed and counted.

I had a sudden fearful image of us being used as a test case in court as the Repubs try to invalidate our, and many other, votes. Not the sort of publicity I might seek.

Fingers crossed there is a blue wave in PA that will render our votes surplus to requirements.

so all of this crap they are filing is moot and will die in court. It's just that it is being done to force Democrats (and associated voting rights organizations) to waste resources responding to the nonsense, while the GOP side uses their dark money "donations" to generate these frivolous suits (rather than spend on their own "ground game" ).

Ineligible votes don’t get counted so they can’t cancel anything. We do have computers and if you
cast an ineligible vote it will be caught. Made up bullshit.

4. Just what we DON'T need a Commander-in Chief (aka CIC) who will ignore the voting rights of military members overseas...

..... while simultaneously promising to use military members at home to "manage" his political opponents at home.

For those who are older enough or have learned the history of the young men and women in military uniforms, "managing" students at KENT State University. We do not need to repeat that mistake.

Are we ready to see another KENT State with tRump as CIC and armed military members controlling Americans within our nation's borders?

I'm not ready to see the military in any form managing political opponents of a treasonous /traitor.
