Senate Democrats lean on abortion rights as closing argument

Source: Axios

Senate Democrats are resting their long-shot hopes of keeping a majority on abortion rights, with the issue dominating their closing arguments two weeks from Election Day.

Why it matters: Democrats are blaming deeply unpopular abortion bans in Texas and Florida on the senators they need to defeat next month: Ted Cruz and Rick Scott.

  • Democrats in blue or toss-up states are counting on abortion rights to get them across the finish line, hammering TV and social media with ads about reproductive rights.

  • The big picture: With Montana looking increasingly out of reach for Democrats, Cruz and Scott are the party's main targets to flip a red seat and keep a Senate majority.

  • Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas), challenging Cruz, is closing his campaign with ads featuring a woman who had to leave Texas to get emergency reproductive care and arguing that Cruz is "leading the charge" on abortion restrictions.
  • Allred will campaign with Vice President Kamala Harris in Texas on Friday, a surprise move by both campaigns down the stretch. The event will focus on abortion.
  • Former Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D-Fla.), challenging Scott, is running multiple TV ads hammering him on reproductive rights, saying Scott "wrote the plan" to ban abortion.

  • Zoom out: The Democrats' two most vulnerable members — Sens. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) — are spending millions on ads supporting abortion rights down the stretch.

  • A pro-Tester Super PAC is spending nearly $2 million on abortion ads in the state from now through Election Day, according to data from AdImpact.
  • Brown's campaign and the campaign arm of Senate Democrats are spending around $5 million on ads about reproductive rights, according to AdImpact.

  • Tester's race could be the tipping point in the Senate, with Republicans only needing to defeat him and protect Cruz and Scott to take over the majority.

Instead, I mainly hear harris talk about housing and price gouging, and that she is not a continuation of Biden. Our economy has been kicking butt. But trump and minions have made everyone believe Biden/harris econ is a failure and they need him to save us. We need to spout off all the great stuff.

Also don't like the gop talking about rigged election and we back it 100% even tho we know they are rigging it in multiple ways. Will make it harder for us to claim fraud after we keep saying how foolproof system is.

The headwinds of the "narrative media" have taken an economy with the greatest job growth pretty much "ever", the lowest unemployment in decades, a record stock market, a healthy GDP, and lowering inflation, and have cherry-picked items that people are complaining about, so they can intentionally mischaracterize "the economy" as only those issues. Those who ARE suffering the gouging - in food, housing, and energy, ARE feeling that squeeze, which is why the focus on that to embarass the industry for operating outside of the economic fundamentals, purely for greed (and many are finally responding). Meanwhile, the "narrative media" have laughed away "Bidenomics", and will then say - "But the debt".

THOSE are the headwinds we have to deal with and if we even attempt to produce liberal/progressive COUNTER-programming, then we are accused (including here on DU) of being "in a bubble".

"The economy" has always been a GOP cudgel and they can't use it.
"Crime" has always been a GOP cudgel and they can't use that either.
"The border" has always been a GOP cudgel, and recently their exhortations look idiotic as few are crossing it anymore.

The bottom line is that the MAJORITY OF WHITE MEN AND WHITE WOMEN VOTE REPUBLICAN. THAT is a fact.

If "reproductive rights" can sway even a few % of WHITE WOMEN to vote for a Democrat for a change, then that WILL help.
