A 26-year-old man who pleaded guilty to attacking a former United States senator received a suspended one-year jail sentence in a Pottawattamie County courtroom Thursday.
Dominic Henton has been released from jail after being credited by Chief Judge Craig Dreismeier of having served about 90 days, County Attorney Matt Wilber told The World-Herald. Henton also was sentenced to two years of probation for having attacked Martha McSally, who represented Arizona in the U.S. Senate from Jan. 3, 2019, until Dec. 2, 2020. Henton previously pleaded guilty to first-degree harassment, Wilber said.
In an Instagram video posted on Nov. 8, 2023, McSally said she was assaulted while jogging in Tom Hanafan Rivers Edge Park near the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge. McSally said her assailant followed her across the pedestrian bridge, engulfed her in a bear hug and molested her. McSally said she fought the man off and chased him into a thicket.
Investigators identified Henton as McSallys attacker due in part to security camera footage showing him following her across the bridge. He was arrested in Omaha the morning after the incident and extradited to Council Bluffs.
