Massachusetts governor: State police would not assist in mass deportations

Source: The Hill

11/07/24 1:30 PM ET

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey (D) said her state’s law enforcement will not assist in mass deportations if President-elect Trump follows though with such a plan.

“No, absolutely not,” Healey told MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell on Wednesday when she was asked whether Massachusetts would assist if the Trump administration asked. “But let me say this, I do think it’s important that we all recognize that there’s going to be a lot of pressure on states and state officials, and I can assure you, we’re going to work really hard to deliver.”

Much of Trump’s agenda over the last eight years has been centered on immigration. He’s promised that on day one of his second term, he will launch “the largest deportation program in American history.”

Healey said there is likely to be litigation against Trump’s plan.

I am fairly sure the State of California will not assist. We’re just waiting for Gavin to make it so. We are preparing for ft’s onslaught.

Blue States run by Democratic Governors will be on the front line of a Resistance Movement against the Trump Fascist Regime. Massachusetts, New York, Illinois, California all will be part of the opposition. Resist Fascism! There is hope.

This will depend on a resistance the likes of which the world has never seen.

Remember, "promises made, promises kept" bullshit he's spewing. Everything he tries to do will be resisted. Even by repugs. Especially if we manage to get the House.

And the Constitution is on their side.

States and local jurisdictions cannot be compelled to enforce Federal laws – including immigration laws.

Not that Trump and his Cult members care about the Constitution, of course.

I expect them to just rubber stamp everything he does as "Constitutional," even if it isn't. I used to think the drafters of the Constitution were brilliant, and some of what they wrote was, but damn did they f up by giving the SC the ultimate unchecked power. Impeachment is the only consequence for corruption by them, and if their party controls the Senate that will never happen. They know that they can be as corrupt as they want to be and we can't do anything to deter them.

Article II

The President can and does negotiate treaties (which must be approved by 2/3 of the Senate) and those might touch on or have some impact on immigration.

13. Are there treaties that authorize the President to order the arrest of another countries citizens though?

If not then we might be at point of letting a President have that much power and influence.

where extradition processes are agreed to by the signatories.

There are too many to name but one who would be well known as an example, is Julian Assange.

In Assange's case, after years of drama in the UK with him living in the Ecuador Embassy after fleeing charges in Sweden (which later dropped the charges), then kicked out, rearrested by Britain, and charged there for breaking his bail terms, and then later announced to be under arrest (in absentia) by the U.S. for espionage associated with his Wikileaks (and that ties into Chelsea Manning who did eventually get pardoned), he finally got a plea agreement with the U.S., and was released to go home to Australia.

I just found this which has Assange's whole timeline over the past dozen years - https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-11949341

15. But that's extradition of someone to the United States that has a warrant out by the US.

Do the people here in the US illegally have warrants issued out on them seeking their extradition for a crime by their own country?

16. The "illegal" part would point to whether there is something agreed to in a treaty or not.

but don't forget the Patriot Act and the FISA courts (and whatever might be going on with those which are classified).
