AP calls Pennsylvania's U.S. Senate race for Dave McCormick but Bob Casey refuses to concede

Source: Pennsylvania Capital-Star

November 7, 2024 4:41 pm

Republican Dave McCormick appeared to win a major upset victory in Pennsylvania, beating three-term incumbent Bob Casey, which would give the GOP a key win in the U.S. Senate, where it now holds 53 seats. The Associated Press called the race on Thursday shortly after 4 p.m. with McCormick leading by 30,919 votes, or 0.46%.

“While votes continue to be counted, any way you slice it, Dave McCormick will be the next United States Senator from Pennsylvania,” Elizabeth Gregory, McCormick communications director, said in a statement Thursday ahead of the AP call.

But Casey did not concede on Thursday afternoon. His campaign sent a statement with a social media post from Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt that reads “Every legitimate vote must be counted in every election, we ask for patience as county election officials continue the work of counting ballots here in Pennsylvania. Election Day is the start of counting ballots here in the Commonwealth.”

Casey campaign spokesperson Maddy McDaniel said the race was not yet over. “As the Pennsylvania Secretary of State said this afternoon, there are tens of thousands of ballots across the Commonwealth still to count, which includes provisional ballots, military and overseas ballots, and mail ballots,” McDaniel said in a statement. “This race is within half a point and cannot be called while the votes of thousands of Pennsylvanians are still being counted. We will make sure every Pennsylvanian’s voice is heard.” If the current margin holds, or remains at or under 0.5%, it would trigger a recount under Pennsylvania law.

30k is a lot to overcome, and i doubt it will happen. But it could get tighter. A recount might jostle loose votes, and find errors. Let it happen.

when he ran for Toomey's seat (that Fetterman (D) ultimately won in the general).

I.e., he even wanted "hand recounts' in the 2022 GOP primary, which Oz won.

As U.S. Supreme Court enters Pa. Senate race, McCormick requests hand recount

In 2022 - McCormick WANTED the "undated" mail ballots to be included in his tally.

From the PA Department of State: "We estimate that there are art least 100,000 ballots remaining to be adjudicated, including provisional, military, overseas, and Election Day votes. We urge patience as election workers continue to do this important work, especially in contests where the margins are very close"

Why the hell is AP calling elections when so many ballots haven't been counted?

Still possible, but he'd have to win a very high percentage of them.

McCormick went through several when he was running in the GOP primary against Oz, for the seat that Fetterman ultimately got.

Those should be overwhelmingly Democratic. The regular provisional will be more mixed but those of us who are still COVID conscious are not setting foot inside an election center.

https://www.pa.gov/en/agencies/vote/voter-support/mail-in-and-absentee-ballot/military-and-overseas-voters.html

What are the deadlines to vote by absentee ballot?

For military and civilian overseas voters, there are two requirements about when to submit your absentee ballot.

  • You must affirm that you mailed your ballot no later than 11:59 pm on the day before Election Day.
  • The County Election Office must receive your ballot no later than 7 days after Election Day by 5 pm.

  • For federal voters, your ballot must be received by 8pm on Election Day.

So right there, you have November 12 as a last cutoff for "receipt" of the regular absentee ballots for overseas citizens.

so ALL counties would need to wait for any outstanding overseas military/civilian (civilian for that deadline meaning non-ex pat) ballots.
