Trump re-election sparks interest in South Korea's '4B' movement among American women
Source: NBC News
The election of Donald Trump as the next U.S. president has triggered a surge of social media posts and internet search interest in South Koreas fringe feminist "4B" movement, which calls on women to refrain from dating, having sex with men, having kids and marrying men.
Across TikTok, dozens of American women disappointed by Tuesdays election results have posted videos stating their intention to participate in their own version of the 4B trend. Over 200,000 people looked up the 4B movement on Google on Wednesday, making it one of the top trending topics on the online search engine.
The 4B trend, which began in South Korea 2018 in the wake of the #MeToo movement, has become a way for some women to protest misogyny, gender discrimination and violence against women, according to Meera Choi, a Ph.D. candidate in the department of sociology at Yale University who studies heterosexual refusal among South Korean women.
Women started thinking about how the government and the state and the men are failing them, said Choi, and they subsequently began not rewarding men by not participating in heterosexual relationships.

We live in strange times I guess, hopefully this reaction is temporary.

Rape targets, and second-class citizens, taxed higher for being childless etc.
Whatever that means.
The fact is that men need women for marriage and family, more than women need men. They have power and should use it.
But if some would rather carry on as if all this is normal, sure, go ahead!

I am reminded of an old poster from the women's movement of the '60s and '70s: A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.

(1,133 posts)preferable than living under a system where women feel they have to trade their bodies for material support (marriage). I saw it years ago, still in my teens, and I was way ahead of my time. I am glad young women are seeing what I saw so long ago. It helped my sisters were way older than me, and for years they lived conventional lives.

(9,877 posts)Its the story of my life. I have had my own place since I was 18. Tried a female roommate at first, but no.
Have lived alone ever since. Never saw any reason to change that. Of course I never wanted kids, so it was a no brainer for me.

I probably still would have had a kid, but I would have done it alone, like a friend of mine did through artificial insemination. I ended up doing all the child rearing work alone anyway while married--while also picking up after my husband AND working full time!

(1,133 posts)Especially in a marriage, a concept which requires women literally trade their bodies for men's use in exchange for material support.
THAT is a waste of a life, not being single. I pity you.

My standpoint then and still is that because pregnancy can be life-threatening if a woman is forced into sex or an attempt is made to force her into sex then that is potentially placing her life at risk. Therefore the use of deadly force should be permitted as a valid claim of self defense in court.
Now I know that might put a crimp in the rosters of some Texas high school and college football teams but it also might make some men and boys think twice before not taking "no" for an answer.

(5,951 posts)extent. A man could pretend to be a good guy and convince a woman to marry him and then the real guy would come out. The domestic violence etc. The cops at the time would usually just try to convince her to "not set him off" etc. People watch "Happy Days" and they think that was the '50's. The reality for those of us who lived it was far from that. I've written about it all many times before but suffice it to say I saw plenty of women in grocery stores with their sunglasses on and you could see marks on their face and neck. Hands all bruised up. Nowhere to turn and even "going home to mother" usually meant the cops showing up and trying to convince you to "go back and make it work". There was little to no financial aid for women with kids so they were stuck with "going back" as the most workable option. Knowing what would happen. Again and again. I saw women so brutalized that their hands were shaking constantly and they almost never smiled. And worse cases than that. I saw women with their arms in a sling or with a bad limp. Seen way more than I could stomach and way too much to ever forget.

These are lessons I learned young. Im afraid a lot of red state women are going to learn them too late.

(1,133 posts)The only answer is to stay away from them entirely. It is way safer to be alone than to have anything to do with them. Many men won't do shit to improve, and it isn't up to women to fix them.
If the human race dies out because women refuse to have anything to do with them, so be it.

(53,823 posts)Of course, many women voted for misogyny in South Korea, like in the US. But the gender gap is similar to the US, albeit more culturally intense in South Korea:
By contrast, young women under 30 were the least supportive constituents for Yoon of all gender-age groups. Only 34% voted for him, according to exit polls.
In recent major elections, young South Korean men and women have consistently shown around 15 to 30 percentage points' difference in their support of the main political parties. While many other developed countries including the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom are observing a similar phenomenon, experts say South Korea's fast social development and politicization of gender issues have made its case particularly intense.
