The Kremlin has denied reports that the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, spoke to the US president-elect, Donald Trump, calling the media reports “pure fiction”.

The Washington Post first reported that a call had taken place, citing unidentified sources, and said Trump had told Putin he should not escalate the Ukraine war. Reuters also reported on a call.

“It is completely untrue. It is pure fiction; it is simply false information,” the Kremlin spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, said when asked about the call. “There was no conversation.

“This is the most obvious example of the quality of the information that is being published now, sometimes even in fairly reputable publications.”

Putin's words have no truth value. They are neither necessarily lies nor are they necessarily true. He says what he needs to accomplish his goals, as he sees them.

"He says it's a lie, so it must be true" is an incorrect deduction. "He says it's a lie, so that claim must serve his interests." If it *were* a lie and he said it was a lie, it would be true; but he'd only say it if it served his interests.

Anonymous people made the claim, saying they had knowledge of the situation. Were they reporting on what one other person claimed? Were they both independent witnesses of the conversation? Did they hear it from Trump? What's the quality of the source? Do they have an incentive (or does their source) to be in error as far as the truth is concerned?

Note that Trump's spokesperson, it was claimed by MSM today, just said "no comment" to the query as to the accuracy of the report. So it's completely unclear that they contradict each other. "Lie" and "not saying" don't really much interact.

and a spokesperson for the other side said no such conversation occurred. And in this case, neither side clearly has more credibility than the other. That was my point, and I'm not sure what (if anything) you're disagreeing with there.

That said, the report from the Trump side was from an unidentified source, which lowers that side's credibility further. And I also have a hard time envisioning Trump quietly telling Putin what to do or not do.

The Kremlin has fiercely denied reports that Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin have already held a call on Ukraine in the days since Trump’s election victory. “This is completely untrue. This is pure fiction, it’s just false information,” Putin’s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Monday, according to Reuters. “This is the most obvious example of the quality of the information that is being published now, sometimes even in fairly reputable publications,” he added, apparently in reference to the Washington Post story over the weekend saying Trump and Putin spoke last Thursday. The newspaper reported Trump took the call from one of his resorts in Florida, and that the president-elect “advised” the Russian premier against escalating the war in Ukraine with a view toward resolving the conflict “soon.” The latest denial comes after Peskov last month also denied claims in a book by Watergate journalist Bob Woodward about Trump and Putin speaking several times after the end of Trump’s first term. Peskov nevertheless confirmed the book’s claim that Trump gifted COVID testing equipment to Putin while in office.
