The first openly transgender incoming member of Congress said Monday she didnt think President-elect Donald Trumps anti-trans TV ads were a major reason for his victory in last weeks election.
As Democrats reel from their losses, some moderates have suggested the party distance itself from messages supporting trans rights. But Sarah McBride said her own election to Delawares at-large House seat showed the anti-trans ads werent effective.
I didnt run on my identity, but my identity was not a secret, and in a state where two-thirds of the voters are in the Philadelphia media market, with a trans candidate on the ballot statewide, that candidate not only performed on par with other Democrats, but had the highest percentage of any Democrat running for major statewide office in Delaware this cycle, McBride said Monday outside the U.S. Capitol.
McBride defeated Republican James Whalen by a comfortable margin and will be seated in January when the next Congress convenes. Democrats have held Delawares sole House seat since 2010; control of the House remains uncertain as votes are still being counted in some western districts, though Republicans appear likely to prevail. McBride spoke Monday at a press conference with other new members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

(1,012 posts)Those ads ran non stop in swing states. They were terrible and lied, but they hit on the fears of the low info voter.

(142,978 posts)PA is a swing state and Philly covers some of Delaware's media market (northern part) since that state is part of our tri-state area. Those ads weren't as prolific here out of Philly stations as they were in other areas of PA, and note that many ads, although appearing on "national" programming, are often more targeted in the local broadcasts of that national programming.

(448 posts)I think in reality it was a major factor along with the perception of open borders for the first couple years of the administration and the perception that national Democrats policy on crime and punishment were the exact same as the Democrats in California and other such enclaves.
In all fairness the Democrats in California almost overwhelmingly kicked out the pro crime lunatics.
