Trump picks Kristi Noem to serve as his Homeland Security secretary

CNN President-elect Donald Trump has selected South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem as his next secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, according to two people familiar with the selection.
Noem will be tapped to take over the agency as two key immigration hardliners Stephen Miller and Tom Homan are slated to serve in senior roles, signaling Trump is serious about his promise to crack down on his immigration pledges. With his selection of Noem, Trump is ensuring a loyalist will head an agency he prioritizes and that is key to his domestic agenda.
The department saw an immense amount of turmoil the last time Trump was in office. Then, DHS had five different leaders, only two of whom were Senate-confirmed. The agency has a $60 billion budget and hundreds of thousands of employees.
Noem, who previously was a South Dakota representative, will now be tasked with overseeing a sprawling agency that oversees everything from US Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the US Secret Service.

(41,356 posts)Kristi Noem is a bona fide dumbbell.
I am now seriously terrified. Before becoming Governor of South Dakota, Kristi Noem was first elected to Congress on the qualification of having won a beauty contest and being crowned South Dakota's Snow Queen. I kid you not. Look it up.
I am certain that the woman hasn't read a book since middle school. Not only is she an incredibly stupid person and a dog murderer, she is also corrupt. You can look that up too.

(186,651 posts)It was meant to better coordinate communication between agencies but it also shredded existing hierarchies and SOP. Yes theres a territorial aspect but a better solution would have been a centralized communications operation.
One of the biggest effects Ive read about is Secret Service. That was under Treasury (the old Wild Wild West TV show) and SS agents were the rock stars and were treated as such in Treasury. If you were a State Trooper lets say and SS recruited you, you signed up. Long hours, tons of time away from home but it was quite an honor. After DHS, recruitment suffered as it was just another small little part of this gigantic whole.
Thanks for the analysis.

(142,348 posts)by cannibalizing agencies from a number of Departments to do so, including Treasury, USDA, and DOT (the latter to get what would be TSA). Reworking Customs alone was just bizarre by suddenly combining it with what was then INS. The result ended up far surpassing the-then oft-ridiculed HHS, as having the most employees.
When I was still working for the feds when this happened, I was in a building that had agencies from 12 different Departments and had acquaintances with some of the employees from those other agencies (including those my agency worked with on occasion), some of whom ended up sucked into DHS.

If you REALLY SCREW UP like Ollie North or Jeanine Pirro they throw small bundles of money your way and put you on TV occasionally. If you avoid crashing the NRA, then you'll eventually get a job on The Five.

So far, these picks are going to really harm these agencies via incompetence. They won't have to end them via executive or legislative action. Sheer stupidity will do it.

(3,057 posts)Then the patronage kicks in. Noem managed to pretend that Trump wasn't having an episode during his "playlist" town hall and has generally been a craven loyalist, so she fits the bill.
The really notable thing about his picks so far is their lack of qualifications mixed with the extreme (corrupt) patronage. Truly a kakistocracy.

Two notable paragraphs from her Wiki:
On November 18, 2019, Noem released a meth awareness campaign named "Meth. We're on It". The campaign was widely mocked and Noem was criticized for spending $449,000 of public funds while hiring an out-of-state advertising agency from Minnesota to lead the project. She defended the campaign as successful in raising awareness.

(51,456 posts)The current lieutenant governor is Larry Rhoden. He's a rancher who's got a significant legislative track record: four and a half terms in the SD House, a term and a half in the SD Senate. The half-terms are explained as such: during his second Senate term he ran for the US Senate but lost the primary, and he had to leave the SD Senate to run for the US Senate - where he lost his primary election. His fifth term in the House was interrupted by him running for lieutenant governor, a race he won.
He's apparently a decent-enough gentleman, although he's got a track record of breaking gavels. The second gavel he broke was one he made himself - he is a talented woodworker.
I think he'll make things better in South Dakota as governor, largely because after Kristi Noem there isn't much of a way he could make anything worse.
