Giuliani's lawyers quit over 'fundamental disagreement'

Source: The Hill

11/13/24 9:38 PM ET

Rudy Giuliani’s attorneys on Wednesday asked to quit representing the former New York City mayor as he battles with two Georgia election workers over their efforts to collect a $146 million defamation judgment. Attorneys Kenneth Caruso and David Labkowski cited New York’s rules that allow attorneys to withdraw when they have a “fundamental disagreement” with their client.

They also cited provisions allowing withdrawal when a client insists upon presenting a claim that can’t be supported in good faith and when a client “fails to cooperate in the representation.”

The attorneys had asked to seal their written requests entirely. U.S. District Judge Lewis Liman declined to do so but did agree to redact certain details, saying it involved privileged information. Liman still must accept their ask to withdraw. “Mayor Giuliani has not been informed by Mr. Caruso of this action. Surely Mr. Caruso would talk to the mayor, or at the very least inform him, of such a decision,” Ted Goodman, Giuliani’s spokesperson, said in a statement.

The twist comes as Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, whom Giuliani defamed by spreading a baseless conspiracy that they were involved in mass election fraud in 2020, appear on the cusp of collecting their massive jury award after months of litigation.

BUT, his ability to stall court proceedings is pretty impressive.
Over the next four years, whenever Trump tries to infringe on our rights, Democrats should follow that example.
Get into court and, if you can win then go ahead and win, and if you can't win, STALL!

so it is unclear whether the deadlines this week for turning over some items or facing a contempt hearing will now be put off as well. I suspect they might and then the inevitable foot-dragging about finding new lawyers. Then the new lawyers foot-dragging about needing time to get up to speed. Then the new lawyers asking for even more time. Then a slight amount of compliance but then more "I don't know" hearings. Then perhaps after another 6 months of delay the new lawyers will quit and the circus keeps going.
