Mass detention and returning migrants to Mexico: Donald Trump's plans on immigration are coming into focus

Washington CNN — The incoming Trump administration’s plans to implement strict border measures, strike down Biden-era policies and kick off the detention and deportation of migrants at large scale are underway and starting to come into focus, according to four sources familiar with the plans.

President-elect Donald Trump made immigration a central element of his 2024 presidential campaign – but unlike his first run, which was spent largely focused on building a border wall, he’s turned his attention to interior enforcement and the removal of undocumented immigrants already in the United States. People close to the president and his aides are laying the groundwork for expanding detention facilities to fulfill his mass deportation campaign promise, including reviewing metropolitan areas where capabilities exist.

But they are also preparing executive actions that are a call back to his first term in office and could be rolled out as soon as Trump takes office, sources say. Taken together, it amounts to the return of hardline immigration policies that garnered fierce criticism from Democrats and immigrant advocates during Trump’s first term – and a dramatic change for migrants and immigrants in the United States.

The executive actions and reviews underway include the return of the program informally known as “remain in Mexico,” which requires migrants to stay in Mexico during their immigration proceedings in the US, revising asylum restrictions, revoking protections for migrants covered by Biden’s humanitarian parole programs and undoing ICE’s enforcement priorities, according to two sources briefed on transition policy discussions.

5. "What he's trying to accomplish is really complex," a former administration official told CNN, referring to Homan.

'Complex' is a gross understatement and the campaign propaganda comment was yet another, stupid say-anything-to-get-a-vote promise by Trump. I don't think any of them have actually considered just how complex and difficult it will be to just shuttle millions of people out of the country, not to mention the expense.

If I had to guess, it'll be like the Great Wall he was gonna' build...they'll round up a few people, put 'em on a bus and send them somewhere...for a while. Then it'll all be lots of talk and lies and no action.

A new report from the American Immigration Council, an immigration rights research and policy firm, estimates that to deport even one million undocumented immigrants a year would cost over $88 billion dollars annually, for a total of $967.9 billion over more than ten years.

There would likely be less tangible and more indirect costs of a mass deportation effort as well. Inevitably there would be ripple effects throughout the economy. In 2022 alone, undocumented immigrant households paid $46.8 billion in federal taxes and $29.3 billion in state and local taxes, according to the report, and "undocumented immigrants also contributed $22.6 billion to Social Security and $5.7 billion to Medicare."

The American Immigration Council report estimates that to carry out even one million deportations a year, ICE would need to hire around 30,000 new officers, "instantly making it the largest law enforcement agency in the federal government," the report reads.

The two largest costs, according to the group, would be hiring additional personal to carry out deportation raids and constructing and staffing mass detention centers. "There would be no way to accomplish this mission without mass detention as an interim step," the report reads.

Trump would also need other nations to accept deported individuals and allow deportation flights to land back on their soil.

A sociopath with the President's title and absolute immunity...can't get any worse than that.

6. Our prisons are pretty full

They can't handle the numbers Trump is going to deport.

The only answer is concentration camps to hold Hispanic people in until they can sort through them and ship them out....or send them out to work in slaughter houses and Bezo's warehouses for free.

I love how CNN minimizes the mass deportations and racist concentration camps as, "Trump's plans coming into focus." and "detention and returning". The guy who said immigrants were poisoning the blood of our country just had plans that needed focusing, some detention and returning is all it is.

They are still sane washing for the dementia riddled Nazis.

7. I was in Ross the other day and a Hispanic looking couple was buying a huge suitcase

I asked them if they were taking a big trip and they said they were preparing to leave the country before they got deported and didn’t want to go into a camp against their will.

I wished them luck.
