NYC politicians call on Whoopi Goldberg to apologize for saying bakery denied order over politics

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City politicians are calling on Whoopi Goldberg to apologize for suggesting on air that a local bakery had declined to make “The View” co-host a batch of desserts for her birthday because of her political beliefs.

Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella was among the local leaders and supporters who joined Holtermann’s Bakery owner Jill Holtermann at a news conference Friday in front of the 145-year-old institution in the city borough of Staten Island.

The Republican said the actor and comedian had “besmirched and defamed” the bakery by “making stuff up to suit their needs.”

“Not everybody wakes up everyday thinking about politics,” he said. “A good business person doesn’t care about anyone’s politics.”

Prove that other customers were served at the same time she made her order and was denied?

This is from the bakery’s lawyer:

“Fossella explained that the bakery’s decades-old boiler had malfunctioned and had to be replaced, so the store didn’t want to commit to making a large order it couldn’t fulfill.”

I'm sure the owner of the bakery has contacts. I'm with you, this is typical RW rat-fuckery.

then why do the politicians demand the apology? Aren't they now making this political? It's all bullshit. I don't know all the details, but I don't think it passes the sniff test.

This never had to be a thing. THEY made it a thing. Surely they know who Whoopi is and that she takes no shit, as we all should be about these issues. All they had to do was their job, take the money and the new business they might have made but they had to make a deal out of it. Even if it is true they obviously do not know how to treat a customer.

Treat your customer as if they were the most important person in the room. It is not rocket science. They knew who she was and some big mouth had to make a remark then try to make her apologize for both things. Add on the usual shopping while black/female and any other damned reason some big mouth has to blow off a comment, just so you know how HE feels, because his FEELS are the most important thing. It must be exciting making women (underlings) feel bad or scared or confused or abused. All the little things every day make it hard to actually get through being around certain people. I stay home.

I do not get these people at all. It is plain stupid but more importantly it is rude and hurtful. Now WE have to add, "Keep it to yourself" along with "Keep it in your pants" and "Keep your hands off". Just another addition that all little girls learn at their mothers knees.

Sorry, got off a little bit but I think the everyday abuses, large and small, against women, famous or not need to always be pointed out. Just like racism, everyone wants to dance around the word, the behavior, the intent etc. This seems a mixed bag of just about everything and Whoopie being Whoopie (love the hell out of her) being who she is does not cool things down...AND IT SHOULDN'T.

OOPS! It was a woman this time? Yikes, sorry men if you had nothing to do with this mess. You are still accountable as are women and me in particular for my huge mistake.

She refused to say.
She had someone else get the desserts for her. I think it was Charlotte Russe, and her mother used to make it for Whoopi's birthday. They passed them out to everyone in the studio to celebrate her birthday with her.

No idea until right now which bakery it was.

We've been living in politically charged times, never so much as these last years...

When the LGBT wedding cake controversy erupted, followed by the marriage certificate denialism, it left an indelible wound on the psyche of all LGBT people (who are living openly); and it's insult to injury for Whoopi to have to apologize, even if what the shop owner said was the truth. There's too much salt being used on open wounds!

The absolute scrutiny and disparagement that has been taking place in all matters of transactional business affairs; from Insurance and doctors visits to car mechanics and roofers - there exists an undertone of discrimination at the most fundamental level of human dignity. I'm talking about everything from refusal to do business by using some convenient excuse to intently performing careless negligence or even vindictive sabatoge. Oh, it exists out there, and it's now a performative agreement backed by millions of the pridefully irreproachable "Christian" right! A wink and a nod between them marks the assurance that gaslit and guarded denialism is at hand.

What is most disturbing about this situation is that we're now living in the easy access digital age. What that means is everything about your private affairs are easily made available to a stranger, or a shop owner at the press of a button; and LGBT are now, more or less, a marked target for 2nd or 3rd class citizen, if even regarded as human at all!

Woe to LGBT who have residence in the biblebelt regions. We're moving into times where you're going to be oppressed by a hostile environment, and it's with deep concern that I make this statement clear.
