ABC Newss Senior White House Correspondent Selina Wang reported on Thursday that President-elect Donald Trumps team has been threatening Republican Senators with Elon Musk-funded primaries if they vote against his cabinet nominees.
Well, Trump has been working the phones. Hes been upping the pressure on Senate Republicans, even calling some of them directly. This is as JD Vance is also making the pitch. It was up on Capitol Hill with Matt Gaetz yesterday meeting with some of those Senate Republicans, Wang began, adding:
And we are told by a Trump official that those meetings were productive. But were also told that behind the scenes, the Trump team has been playing hardball and theyve been giving an ominous warning to any Senate Republicans who might oppose his nominees.
One Trump adviser telling our Jon Karl that the message is, quote, If you are on the wrong side of the vote, youre buying yourself a primary. That is all. And theres a guy named Elon Musk who is going to finance it. The Trump adviser added, The president gets to decide his cabinet. No one else.

(48,851 posts)whether voters would choose a Trump candidate for Senator over an incumbent, e.g., Mitch McConnell.
Would they blindly vote for a Senator (more powerful as s/he would represent their state, not their district) solely because Trump told them to?

(50,934 posts)The cabinet is the servant of the people. Period.
Further, they are representatives of the United States of America in the world as Secretary of State, trade negotiators, and deal makers. There are many international issues of cooperation and contention that are cabinet level.
The red light warning here is that the message goes beyond mere assertion but moves to strong arm enforcement in pure fascist style (business and political leadership arm in arm, at least selectively).

(102,513 posts)Musk is an essential cog in this machine. Trump needs to keep him sweet with government contracts and made-up positions of power. Why worry that the constitution stops you from running for president when you can just buy a president instead?

(40,168 posts)We have seen articles about musk inserting himself into Trump's inner circle and inner/outside Republicans worrying about it. Musk's money is so powerful that they are using it as a weapon against their own people. Money is buying Trump. He did not like crypto very much until they started donating. He did not like electric vehicles until Elon start using his money for Trump. Putting money into Trump was the best investment Putin ever made.

Well, will the Senators choose Party or Country? And, are they considering the possibility the Democratic opponent might take them out if they choose poorly? Trump's got to do a lot of promise-keeping over the next two years: fix the border, fix the high prices, fix the crime (?), restore (?) middle class living standards.
I don't think he got the votes because of his retribution agenda and that agenda won't fix the border or high prices.
The fact that the Senate hasn't caved to what they know is Trump's true agenda, gives me a slight glimmer of hope they may have finally decided Trump truly is the existential threat that needs to be stopped.

(18,700 posts)The U.S. Constitution would beg to differ, jackhole.
He shall have Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to make Treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur; and he shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls, Judges of the supreme Court, and all other Officers of the United States, whose Appointments are not herein otherwise provided for, and which shall be established by Law: but the Congress may by Law vest the Appointment of such inferior Officers, as they think proper, in the President alone, in the Courts of Law, or in the Heads of Departments.
Of course, we know TSF and his team of corrupt and incompetent clowns don't give a flying fig what the Constitution says. Too bad for them.
